Out-of-sorts Harriers continue slump with Solihull defeat

Lewis Walker's ninth goal of the season had given Harriers a third-minute advantage, but the hosts responded with two first-half goals to take the points in the National League encounter. It’s a defeat that leaves the outfit eight without a win in the division.

Wotton was particularly disappointed with his side's performance before the break, feeling they had failed to build on their early breakthrough.

He said: "I thought our back four looked a bit disjointed today. I thought we looked individual, playing as individuals, and that's not us.

"We persisted in playing short balls out from the back. It's not really us, so I'm not quite sure what we were thinking first half."

Wotton had made two changes to the starting eleven following the goalless draw at Altrincham. One was enforced, with Richard Faakye returning from suspension to replace Luey Giles, sent off at Moss Lane.

Also into the side came the returning Maz Kouhyar, who rejoined Harriers on loan from Notts County 24 hours before the match having spent a successful campaign in Worcestershire on loan from York City in 2024-25.

Walker gave the visitors an ideal start with his early opener, finished after good work by Kouhyar and then Callum Stewart, but Solihull were level within three minutes when a cheaply conceded free kick resulted in an unmarked Ben Woodsku header finding the net.

An unfortunate own goal then put Moors ahead before the interval, while a slip from goalkeeper Jack Wint presented the hosts with another opportunity, only for the resulting effort to miss an open goal.

Harriers had chances of their own before the break, with Kouhyar and Ben Crompton both denied by goalkeeper Sam Johnson.

Wotton added: "Obviously we had the best start you could have. And then after that first half, it was awful.

"The first goal we conceded, in my opinion, we never got over that for some strange reason."

The visitors improved after the restart but struggled to fashion clear openings, Walker seeing an effort saved on 73 minutes before substitute Bruce Minaker was denied by Johnson five minutes from time.

The Harriers boss did, however, reserve praise for returning wide man Kouhyar.

"I thought he was the shining light and you could see his ability and his willingness as well, and that extra bit of quality."

The Aggborough chief will continue to assess his walking wounded in the week ahead. Giles will return for the FA Cup First Round clash with Doncaster Rovers at Aggborough (Saturday 3pm) but Owen Evans, Connor Mahoney, Zak Brown, Reece Devine and Callum Dolan are all continuing to receive treatment for injury.
