Jaylen Brown has built a reputation as one of the game’s top two-way players across 10 NBA seasons but has never earned an All-Defensive Team selection. The five-time All-Star joined the Philadelphia 76ers in July 2026, two years after winning a championship and Finals MVP with the Boston Celtics in 2024.

The absence of defensive hardware has always been a talking point around Brown, and it came back into focus when six-time All-Defensive Team selection Tony Allen publicly questioned whether the label holds up on that side of the ball. Fans online largely sided with Allen’s skepticism.

Fans React to Tony Allen Cutting Jaylen Brown from the League’s Best Defenders

The exchange came during a discussion on the “Out The Mud” podcast which Allen co-hosts with former NBA forward Zach Randolph. Allen had run through his own list of who he considers the real defenders in the league today before former NBA point guard Brandon Jennings pushed back with Brown’s name.

“You could count on your hand who the defenders are in the league now. The Thompson twins, [Alex] Caruso, [Cason] Wallace, [Lu] Dort, [Jaden] McDaniels,” Allen said.

Jennings offered Brown’s name in response and Allen was not convinced.

“Jaylen who?” Allen remarked.

“Jaylen Brown,” Jennings repeated. “From Philly. He got Finals MVP.”

Allen was not convinced that Brown’s accolades supported the argument and questioned whether he had ever received recognition for his defense.

“Have he ever been first team or anything? I might be wrong. I never scouted him like this,” Allen said.

When confirmed that Brown had never made an All-Defensive Team, Allen appeared satisfied with his original assessment.

The clip of the exchange resonated with fans online who felt Allen had said what needed to be said.

“Tony Allen you are a legend. Thank you,” wrote one user.

Others pointed to the 2008 NBA Champion’s own defensive background as what made the take credible.

“Thank god someone with sense. Shocker it came from an actually elite defender,” said another fan.

Some framed it as a rare moment of straight talk from someone inside the game.

“Finally an NBA player who uses logic,” said one hoops fan.

Not all the reactions were directed at Allen. Some fans turned the commentary toward Brown himself.

“Is Jaylen Brown paying guys to go on podcasts and say these things,” asked one fan.

One user took a more measured position on Brown’s defensive value, separating his on-ball and off-ball work.

“JB is a plus on ball defender, not elite, but he’s also a negative off ball defender. He grades out as an average defender,” opined the user.

The conversation comes as Brown is managing an early injury setback in his first season with Philadelphia. He missed the 76ers’ NBA Cup game against the Knicks on Friday after being downgraded from questionable to doubtful with knee soreness, which he first reported after the team’s game in Indianapolis.

The 76ers later confirmed a left knee patellar tendinopathy diagnosis. Head coach Nick Nurse made it clear that the situation is different from that of teammate Jabari Walker, who carries the same designation, and cautioned against using Walker’s timeline as a reference point for Brown’s return.

In five games this season, Brown is averaging 20.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 44.2% from the field and 40.9% from three. His numbers are down from the 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists he averaged in 2025-26 with Boston, though he joined one of the more talent-heavy starting fives in the league when he moved to Philadelphia in July 2026.

His status for tonight’s game against the Charlotte Hornets at Spectrum Center has not been confirmed by the team.
