Liverpool are attempting to capitalise on Chelsea’s failed move to sign Lamine Camara in the summer by arranging a January transfer for the Senegalese international.
The common consensus in the summer was that Liverpool needed another central midfielder and a right-back. Neither transfer happened, although the Reds did complete a sensational £123m deal with PSG to bring Bradley Barcola to Anfield.
This season was never going to be one with a major haul of silverware, with the Premier League title already looking like a distant dream after Arsenal’s 1-0 at Anfield on Sunday evening, taking the Gunners three points clear at the top of the table and nine points clear of Liverpool, who sit in fifth place.
Yet, a move to sign Camara will enhance their chances of winning one of the knockout tournaments.
According to a report from Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb, Chelsea are likely to have changed tactics, with the Blues keen to sign Alex Scott from Bournemouth.
Liverpool are reportedly expected to start talks with Monaco this month as they attempt to bring Camara to the club in the winter transfer window. The Reds are likely to offer around €50m – €5m more than the €45m Chelsea agreed to pay in the summer.
Camara and Nyoni are different players altogether.
Nyoni is a controller, and Camara is a ball-winner – they could be very good together.
However, signing Camara would likely see Nyoni receive fewer minutes, but, particularly after his Arsenal performance, the young Liverpool midfielder would be hard done by in this exchange.
When Nyoni was named in the starting XI against the Gunners, I was a little worried for him. The Arsenal midfield is highly competitive, and I worried that Nyoni would struggle.
Boy, was I wrong. It’s no exaggeration to say that Nyoni dominated the game for Liverpool with his passing, smart positioning and mature reading of the game.
In fact, it wasn’t until Nyoni came off that Arsenal found a real footing in terms of possession.
