Edinburgh Capitals clinch double victory joy as cup success and league win secured

Edinburgh Capitals had a winning weekend of ice hockey.

Coming off a great double-header, Edinburgh Capitals are seeking similar against the North Ayrshire Wild this weekend, after two key wins.

The Edinburgh Capitals bounced back in their latest matches, defeating the Aberdeen Lynx in league play, and closing out the Solway Sharks in their first Scottish Cup tie. Caps and Lynx fans poured into the Murrayfield Ice Arena to watch two of the top SNL teams clash for the second time this season. Last month, the two teams faced off in Aberdeen, with the Caps taking a dominant 10-2 victory on the road.

However, since then, despite struggling with losing several key players in the offseason, the Lynx came into the weekend on a four game win streak. The improvement in Aberdeen’s form was apparent from the drop of the puck, matching the Capitals intensity and pace of play, even scoring the first goal of the game.

However, that wouldn’t stop the Caps relentless offense from leaving the first period with three on the board. Caly Robertson scored his first in a Caps uniform to bring his side back level, with Kyle Howie potting his first of the season to give the Capitals their first lead of the game not long after.

Joe Lynch brought the Caps lead to two with only a few seconds left in the period on a beautiful feed from Captain Joel Gautschi behind the net. But the second showed a different side of the Aberdeen Lynx, after going down 4-1 from a laser by the 16-year-old Irishman, Jonah Johnson, they would score two unanswered leaving the score at 4-3 going into the third.

Looking to break the streak of unanswered goals, the Caps turned up their offense by peppering Lynx goaltender Rory Wood, who stopped everything up until the last minute and a half. Marty Simpson crushed Aberdeen’s hopes of coming back into the game, rifling a shot past Wood to bring the Caps lead to two.

Simpson’s goal snapped the wheels off Aberdeen, who collapsed in the last minute conceding twice more with goals going to Sean Stewart and Richard Hartman, leaving the final score at 7-3.

Caps then loaded the bus to Dumfries for their first Scottish Cup tie of the season. The Caps kicked off the scoring in the first, with goals coming from Hartman and Stewart giving them an early two goal lead. The Sharks would take one back late in the period to bring the score to 2-1, but this would be the only time they would sneak one past goaltender Ciaran Hoggan.

The second and third were all Caps, Hartman scored his second of the game in the middle period, with Rihards Grigors potting one of his own as well. Sean Stewart would score the final goal for the Caps in the third rounding out his brace to bring the Caps lead to 5-1 (11-1 Agg).
