NASCAR chief warns Martinsville wreck will 'not be tolerated' in fiery warning

A penalty could be heading the way of NASCAR Xfinity Series star Sam Mayer, after the 22-year-old took retribution into his own hands at Martinsville Speedway, wrecking Jeb Burton after the checkered flag had flown.

Haas Factory Team's Mayer wrecked Jordan Anderson Racing's Burton as revenge for the 33-year-old triggering a mass wreck in the previous race at Talladega Superspeedway, which had a huge knock-on effect for Mayer's Playoff hopes.

The fire of frustration was further stoked after the two traded barbs throughout the race in Virginia.

Justified or not - depending on who is asked - the incident went down like a lead balloon among the NASCAR brass, with senior vice president of competition, Elton Sawyer, making his frustration clear on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

"Having (that) type of incident after the checkered flag, it's just not something we're going to tolerate," he said, per NBC Sports. "We'll get with our team today, discuss it, and see what the next steps are."

Sawyer added that he planned to let Xfinity Series director Eric Peterson lead the way, explaining that he would speak to both Mayer and Burton to hear their versions of events before coming to a decision, potentially as early as Tuesday.

"We'll go back and look at all the replay. We'll look at the race as an entirety to see what unfolded early on, and then we take all of that, we sit down and look at prior situations that are similar, and we'll make a decision on how we move forward," Sawyer said.

"When things happen after the race and we start using vehicles to run into each other, that rises to a different level and we'll respond accordingly."

DON'T MISS...

When it comes to Mayer and Burton's sides of the story, it's safe to say they won't be coming to anything resembling an amicable agreement to disagree any time soon.

After the race, Burton told reporters he believes Mayer "was mad that last week he got taken out in an accident at Talladega, and he was acting like a child, like Sam is..."

He went on to add how Mayer "destroyed our car and wrecked us. Hopefully, NASCAR does something because he literally right-reared me into the outside wall. I hate it for my guys to tear up a car.

"I race a lot of people out here with respect, and I just want it back. He ran over me for no reason, so I gave it back to him and he threw a temper tantrum...I would love to talk to him, but there wouldn't be much talking...The way he acts, he's a punk. I think everybody knows that."

Mayer, meanwhile, confirmed that the Talladega wreck was the primary driving force behind the Martinsville incident, explaining, "He caused a 20-car pile up at Talladega, which put us in the spot we're in going into today. So, it was his fault to begin with."

He later described the issue as one of "principle," labeling Burton "the worst person to race around in the entire garage. He has a reputation of being over his head every single week, and this was a prime example of it. He just can't take no for an answer.

"A (Playoff driver) racing for something huge, moved him out of the way and went on and was faster than him in the end. As soon as he got back to me, he gave it the beans and tried to wreck me three corners in a row.

"Thank God I have enough car control where I can hold on to it and not wreck. He has no respect for someone racing for something that's bigger than what he is."
