Keyshawn Johnson backs Mike Tomlin's grim warning to Brian Schottenheimer: "You're dead"

Former NFL coach’s blunt warning gains support as Dallas searches for answers on defense

Former NFL wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson has backed Mike Tomlin’s blunt assessment of the Dallas Cowboys’ players-only defensive meeting, suggesting the gathering could spell trouble for head coach Brian Schottenheimer.

Johnson agreed with the former Pittsburgh Steelers coach that such meetings can point to deeper issues within a team’s leadership.

“You’re so dead,” Johnson told NFL insider Jordan Schultz, echoing Tomlin’s warning. “Mike Tomlin is correct. You’re done. This is a Hall of Fame coach telling you, this ain’t me. It came from a Hall of Fame coach.”

The Cowboys’ defense met Monday to discuss its standards and performance.

Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown said the players worked through their concerns point by point, while pass rusher Rashan Gary described the gathering as an opportunity to get everyone aligned and build better habits.

Although the meeting could help restore accountability, its public disclosure has prompted questions about the state of the team and its coaching staff.

Cowboys’ defensive struggles put Schottenheimer under scrutiny

Dallas’ defensive numbers help explain the growing concern. Through five games, the Cowboys have surrendered 395.4 yards per contest, among the league’s highest totals. They’ve also recorded only five sacks and have yet to intercept a pass.

The shortcomings were clear against Tampa Bay. Running back Bucky Irving rushed for 165 yards and a touchdown, while the Buccaneers piled up 241 yards on the ground.

Dallas also allowed 394 total yards against the New York Giants, highlighting problems with stopping opposing offenses.

Tomlin wasn’t necessarily criticizing players for meeting without coaches, but questioned why news of the gathering had become public.

He said he’d rather not hear about such meetings, arguing that the publicity undermines their purpose and raises uncomfortable questions for the head coach.

Schottenheimer has taken a more positive view. He called the discussion open and honest, pointing to the pride within the defensive unit and expressing confidence that the players could work through their problems together.

Dallas has also added experienced help, bringing Mike Pettine out of retirement as a senior defensive assistant. Pettine previously worked with defensive coordinator Christian Parker in Green Bay and helped bring Parker into the NFL coaching ranks in 2019.

He also shares a longstanding relationship with Schottenheimer, dating to their time with the New York Jets.

Pettine said he returned because a friend asked for help, while Parker maintained that the timing suited both men rather than representing a rescue mission.

The Cowboys, who finished last season with one of the NFL’s weakest defenses, now face another difficult challenge against the Green Bay Packers. Dallas enters at 2-3, while Green Bay is 3-2.
