Wayne Rooney has added another major accolade to his collection, with the Manchester United legend coming out on top against fierce competition, including a former Liverpool star.
Rooney remains one of United’s greatest ever players, scoring a club-record 253 goals across 13 seasons at Old Trafford.
The former England captain won five Premier League titles, the Champions League, FA Cup and Europa League during his illustrious career.
Despite being born in Liverpool, Rooney grew up supporting Everton, developing a fierce rivalry with Liverpool long before joining United in 2004.
He enjoyed several memorable moments against the Merseyside club, including scoring twice in a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford in February 2012.
Four years later, Rooney struck the decisive goal in a 1-0 victory at Anfield, further cementing his status among United supporters.
That rivalry remains particularly significant, with the two clubs continuing to battle for supremacy in English football.
Their most recent meeting came in May, when Michael Carrick’s side secured a dramatic 3-2 victory at Old Trafford.
Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko established a two-goal advantage before Liverpool fought back through Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo.
However, Kobbie Mainoo’s 77th-minute winner secured all three points and confirmed United’s Champions League qualification.
Now, Rooney has secured another victory over Liverpool opposition, this time away from the football pitch.
According to the Broadcast Sport Awards, Rooney was among eight nominees for the 2026 Pundit of the Year award.
The 41-year-old officially won the prestigious honour at Thursday’s ceremony in London, beating Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher.
Other nominees included Alan Shearer, Ally McCoist, Emma Hayes, Karen Carney, Neil Hodgson and Sean Rose.
Rooney was recognised for his work covering the 2026 FIFA World Cup for BBC Sport, earning praise for his enthusiasm, personality and technical analysis.
The award represents a significant achievement for Rooney, who has established himself in broadcasting following his departure from football management.
