Charles Leclerc topped practice at the United States Grand Prix with a 1:36.052, just ahead of Max Verstappen.
The first running of the weekend at the Circuit of the Americas began with plenty of testing equipment up and down the grid.
Ferrari led early with Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, but once the soft tyres came out it was Leclerc who solidified his spot at the top of a competitive top seven.
Back-to-back race winner Max Verstappen was just 0.080 seconds behind, with the top five separated by 0.5 seconds.
Championship leader Kimi Antonelli was in fifth, just behind Mercedes teammate George Russell, while reigning world champion Lando Norris put his McLaren third.
Antonelli was involved in the only real drama from FP1, when he blocked Red Bull's Isack Hadjar but quickly apologised.
Meanwhile, Nico Hulkenberg had the toughest time, abandoning his running late on in 18th.
Hukenberg's teammate, Gabriel Bortoleto, was one of the handful of riders to undertake heavy aero testing with a huge weather vane across the back of his Audi.
Cadillac reserve Colton Herta had a similar set up, while various other cars went big on the flow-viz.
Williams didn't clock a time until the final five minutes, and the British team soon confirmed they were also undertaking testing.
A team statement read: "During FP1, both our drivers will be carrying out an aero testing programme to assist with development of both this year’s car and the FW50 for next season."
