André Luiz: Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest told €30m, and player wants PL move

Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest could have something going for them if they ever decide to return for Corinthians midfielder André Luiz.

Both clubs showed interest in the Brazilian during the summer, but neither managed to sign him.

Just yesterday we covered reports that Corinthians now want at least €30m (£26m) for the 20-year-old, following his first call-up to Brazil’s senior squad.

Well, there’s another update from Brazil, and this time it’s about what André himself wants. Apparently, he’s got his eye on the Premier League.

There are still a couple of things to sort out at Corinthians before any move can happen, though.

André would like a move to England

According to ESPN Brazil, André Luiz has been telling people behind the scenes that he’d prefer to play in the Premier League in the future.

And while England is his preferred destination, André isn’t ruling out other leagues. ESPN make clear that he’s keeping his options open.

There’s also a feeling at Corinthians that his upcoming international appearances could get European clubs looking at him again.

Carlo Ancelotti has called him up for Brazil’s November friendlies against Japan and Singapore, giving him his first taste of senior international football.

The timing isn’t bad at all from Corinthians’ point of view. They already believe André is worth considerably more than he was during the summer. A good showing for Brazil would hardly hurt their argument.

Corinthians have a couple of things to sort out first

Even if a Premier League club comes knocking in January, there’s no guarantee Corinthians will be ready to negotiate straight away. ESPN say two important situations need to become clearer over the next few weeks.

One is the club’s presidential election. Corinthians will have a new president, and that could change how they handle André’s future. After what happened with Milan earlier this year, that’s hardly a minor detail.

The other is their fight against relegation. Corinthians are trying to keep themselves in Brazil’s top flight, and their final league position will also have a bearing on what happens next.

So while André Luiz might have a destination in mind, there’s quite a bit going on at his club before anyone can start making plans for January.

André was even willing to give up money to join Milan

ESPN have also added some interesting details about just how close André Luiz came to moving to Italy earlier this year.

Milan initially reached a verbal agreement with much of Corinthians’ football department over a €17m (£14.7m) deal. Then president Osmar Stabile stepped in and stopped it.

According to ESPN, Stabile had come under pressure from political allies who didn’t want the midfielder sold. Milan weren’t finished there, either.

They came back with an improved offer worth €22m (£19.1m), made up of €18m (£15.6m) guaranteed and another €4m (£3.5m) in bonuses. That was for the 70% of André’s economic rights belonging to Corinthians.

And here’s another interesting bit. ESPN say André was even prepared to give up his own 30% share of the deal to help the transfer go through. It still wasn’t enough to get him to Milan.

A few months later, Forest tried their luck and ended up getting nowhere with their €12m (£10.4m) offer.

Now André has earned himself a Brazil call-up, Corinthians are asking for considerably more money, and the player apparently fancies a move to England.

The tricky part is that Corinthians have plenty to deal with themselves before January arrives. And after the Milan saga, interested clubs will probably want a clearer idea of exactly who they’ll be negotiating with.
