Anthony Edwards scored a game-high 47 points Monday night, earning praise from NBA analyst Keith Smith for his late shot-making despite the Minnesota Timberwolves’ 127-125 overtime loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Minnesota entered the game 3-0 but was playing the second night of a back-to-back. Edwards had scored 26 points in 28 minutes against the Toronto Raptors on Sunday before playing 41 minutes in Cleveland.

The Timberwolves guard scored 20 points in the first half as Minnesota built a 60-50 halftime lead at Rocket Arena. Cleveland had trailed by as many as 15 points before mounting its comeback.

The Cavaliers outscored Minnesota 36-26 in the third quarter to tie the game at 86 entering the fourth. James Harden, who started 1-for-7 from the field, found his rhythm after halftime and helped Cleveland recover.

Edwards kept making shots as the teams traded leads down the stretch. The Cavaliers struggled to stay with him when he came off pin-downs, and Smith wrote on X: “Anthony Edwards has ice in his veins. Such a killer.”

The Minnesota star scored 27 points after halftime and finished 19-of-33 from the field, including five 3-pointers on 15 attempts.

Basketball account Hoop Central offered a similar assessment: “Anthony Edwards clutch.”

The fourth quarter featured several exchanges between the two teams, with neither able to pull away. The game had 16 lead changes, and Cleveland never led by more than five points.

Harden’s floater tied the score at 113 before Peyton Watson blocked Edwards to send the game to overtime. Watson finished with four blocks, including the late defensive play against Minnesota’s leading scorer.

Donovan Mitchell also delivered late for Cleveland, scoring 12 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter and overtime. His shot-making gave the Cavaliers an answer as Edwards continued to produce at the other end.

Podcaster Jack Borman enjoyed the exchange between the two guards. “Anthony Edwards vs. Donovan Mitchell going shot-for-shot has been tremendous theater.”

Evan Mobley opened overtime with a 3-pointer, and Mitchell’s layup over Rudy Gobert gave Cleveland a three-point lead.

The Timberwolves guard answered with a 3-pointer to erase the deficit, but Mitchell hit another jumper to put the Cavaliers back in front.

Minnesota also lost Jaden McDaniels to fouls during the extra period. He finished with 14 points before fouling out.

Cleveland outscored Minnesota 14-12 in overtime to secure the win. Mitchell finished with five 3-pointers and seven assists, while Harden added nine assists.

Edwards had carried much of Minnesota’s scoring load across 41 minutes, but Cleveland got more production from the players around Mitchell. The Cavaliers guard received 101 points from his teammates, compared with 78 from Edwards’ teammates.
