Cherries Looking To Continue Good Run

After another 0-3 victory, this time against Manchester United, our next game is another evening game at Dean Court in the 4th Round of the League Cup, and our opponents are Aston Villa. The game is on Wednesday at 7.45 pm, and it is also being shown on Sky+. This will be the first meeting in this competition between our two clubs.

AFC Bournemouth v Aston Villa - EFL Cup

AFCB Win

Villa Win

Villa have won the League Cup five times and been runners-up four times. They won it in 1961 against Rotherham United. In 1975 their opponents were Norwich City. Then two years later in 1977 they beat Everton. Their next appearance in the final was in 1994 against Manchester United. 1996 was their last final to date against Leeds United.

Aston Villa lost in the final in 1963 to their rivals Birmingham City. Then eight years later in 1971 they were beaten by Spurs. It wasn’t until 2010 until then they lost again in the final, this time against Manchester United. Their last runners-up appearance was ten years later, in 2020, when they lost against another side from Manchester, City.

Last season Aston Villa were beaten away at Brentford on penalties in the 3rd Round. Previously, Brentford had beaten our team at Dean Court in the 2nd Round. This season in the 3rd Round Villa visited Coventry City and won 1-3. The Cherries beat Lincoln City 4-0 at Dean Court.

In all competitions against Aston Villa, AFCB have W 5, D 4, L 8.

AFCB Team News
Hopefully no new injuries after Sunday’s game. Think we will see changes for this game, with the Premier League game on Saturday at home against Leeds United.

AFCB Player To Watch
Junior Kroupi will probably start in this game after coming on at Old Trafford on Sunday for the last few minutes of the game. Be good to see him back and get a run out and match fitness before our home game against Leeds United.

Aston Villa Team News
On the injury front, they are missing Amadou Onana, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Matteo Ruggeri and Modou Keba Cisse.

Aston Villa Player To Watch
If they play, they were both substitutes in the previous round. Young Swiss midfielder Johan Manzambi who has scored 2 goals and has 2 assists in the league. Nicolas Jackson is their leading scorer in the league with 4 goals. Tammy Abraham scored 2 goals in their away game in the League Cup 3rd Round.

The Referee
Tony Harrington is in charge of this game. The last time he took a game involving AFCB was in September 2024 when we lost 3-0 against Liverpool at Anfield.

It will be interesting to get a measure of our squad depth compared to Villa’s with this one, given that both teams are likely to make multiple changes to their lineups.

This one is too close to call for me. Could go either way. We are playing at home, though, so hopefully that will see us over the line! – To join the conversation, please click here.
