Football news expert Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on several major transfer stories, including the latest on Lamine Camara, Alex Scott and Ronald Araujo.

Article continues under the video

Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal suspension

Cristiano Ronaldo has officially been suspended for 30 days by the Portugal national team after leaving his country’s camp last month.

The Al-Nassr striker was an unused substitute versus Norway and he opted to walk out after learning that he would not be included in the starting XI against Denmark. He subsequently apologised for his actions, and while his punishment is a 30-day suspension, he has already served 19 of these days and he will therefore not miss any Portugal matches.

“I wanted to start today with Cristiano Ronaldo because he has been one of the big stories in September. We are now in October, and we are at the end of the Cristiano Ronaldo saga with Portugal,” Romano said in his latest YouTube video.

“Because you all remember what happened in September. Cristiano decided to leave the national team camp when they were in Denmark after what happened with the coach, Jorge Jesus.

“Cristiano was not happy at all with the situation. So, on a temporary basis, Cristiano left the Portuguese national team, and they decided to continue without Cristiano until the end of the games and then clarify the situation.

“Cristiano himself asked for a punishment. He said, 'I am the captain of the national team, and I have to be a role model, so it was a mistake to leave the national team camp.' So, it was Cristiano himself suggesting a punishment while adding, 'I never interfered with any coach's technical or tactical decisions in my career.' That is important.

“And now, guys, we have the verdict. The Portuguese Football Federation announced tonight that Cristiano has been punished with a 30-day suspension and a fine of €255. Yes, €255.

“So, this is the decision from the federation. An important point, and here is the update, concerns the timing of the suspension. Sources within the Portuguese federation suggest that the suspension started following what happened in Denmark. So, basically, Cristiano will serve a 30-day suspension, but he will be available in November because of the timing of the suspension in relation to Portugal's games. There is another international break in November, starting on Monday, 9 November.

“Now, it is up to Jorge Jesus to make a decision. The president of the federation, Pedro Proença, has already said publicly, 'Cristiano is the best player ever. Cristiano is a player we need with the national team. We want Cristiano back. The federation, the technical staff and the team-mates all want Cristiano back.' That is what Pedro Proença said. So, let's follow the next steps.

“Let's see what Jorge Jesus will decide, but for sure, we are entering a different chapter because the suspension will be over soon. Cristiano has been suspended with a very small fine, but he will still be available for the Portuguese national team. So, let's see what is going to happen next.”

Alex Scott transfer update

Alex Scott is set to dominate the transfer gossip columns in January, and Romano has confirmed that Chelsea are set to battle Liverpool for his signature.

A January move for the Bournemouth midfielder is possible, as I told you, especially if a big proposal arrives,” Romano said.

"Let me clarify one thing. Bournemouth are not putting Alex Scott on the market. It is not that Bournemouth are saying they want to sell Alex Scott. Obviously, he is a fantastic player and an England international. So, they are now opening the door, which is different. In the summer, the door was closed. Now, the door is open.

“Chelsea are there, for sure. Chelsea are very interested in the player. Chelsea have had several contacts with his agents. Chelsea considered Alex Scott their top target in midfield over the summer, and it was not possible to proceed, but Chelsea loved the player. So, Chelsea are still there.

“Then there is Liverpool. Liverpool made calls at the end of June and the beginning of July. They never submitted a bid, unlike Chelsea. Chelsea made a bid and were there for Alex Scott, but Bournemouth rejected it.

“So, let's see what is going to happen next. I wanted to clarify one thing, guys. Chelsea are definitely there for Alex Scott. Again, regarding Liverpool, it was about calls, but as far as Liverpool are concerned, let's see what is going to happen with Alex Scott.”

Lamine Camara latest

In addition, Chelsea and Liverpool are also both interested in signing Lamine Camara, although the latter are now the frontrunners as things stand.

“Many of you have been asking me about Lamine Camara. Guys, he was this close to joining Chelsea. It was a ‘Here We Go’ on Deadline Day, but then the deal collapsed because of the domino effect involving Monaco,” Romano confirmed.

“Chelsea were furious. The situation became very tense. Since that moment, Chelsea have disappeared from the Lamine Camara story. Chelsea were no longer in talks over Lamine Camara because they believed Monaco's behaviour was completely inappropriate.

“So, Liverpool are following Lamine Camara. They have been tracking him for a long time. There have been some calls regarding Alex Scott, and Liverpool have also been tracking Lamine Camara.

“What I can tell you is that Liverpool are planning to do something important in midfield in 2027, adding very good players to that area. So, these are not just backup players. They want players who can be starters or future starters at Liverpool.

“Midfield is an area Liverpool have started considering, not just because of the calls regarding Alex Scott, with Chelsea also interested, and not just because of their appreciation of Lamine Camara. It is also a general consideration. Even in the conversations they are having with the coach, Andoni Iraola, midfield is an area Liverpool want to address in 2027.

"Then, it is a question of whether that happens in January or in the summer. It depends on the opportunity. We know Liverpool's style. Even now, with the new directors, it is not about going out and buying players simply for the sake of buying them or filling a position. Liverpool like to enter the market only when the right opportunity is there, and that will remain the main strategy at Liverpool.

“So, if the right opportunity arises in January, Liverpool will be ready to try. Otherwise, it will be in the summer, but midfield will 100% be an area of focus for Liverpool in 2027.”

Ronald Araujo to join Liverpool permanently?

Finally, Romano provided an update on Ronald Araujo’s situation at Liverpool following his loan move from Barcelona over the summer.

“Then, guys, I also want to mention something about Araujo because we are talking about Liverpool, and in my opinion, Liverpool made a very smart signing with Ronald Araujo,” Romano revealed.

“They did not pay a loan fee, but they are paying a big salary because Liverpool covered Ronald Araujo's entire salary, and he was on a very big salary at Barcelona.

“But it was a very smart signing. Ronald Araujo can play right-back. Ronald Araujo can play centre-back, of course. Ronald Araujo is a leader. It is true that he did not speak English at the beginning, but he is studying. He is working hard to become part of this Liverpool squad. I can tell you that Ronald Araujo is very happy.

“It is like a breath of fresh air. At Liverpool, it was not easy for Araujo to leave Barcelona because he loves Barça.

“Araujo was a captain. Araujo was a great friend to all his team-mates. So, Araujo loved life at Barcelona, but now he is very happy at Liverpool. The connection has been very good, even with the fans. So, the Araujo situation is definitely one to watch in 2027.

“Liverpool, you remember that exclusive breaking news that night. The ‘Here We Go’ came out of nowhere, and it was crazy in August. And I told you that Liverpool have a €55 million buy option clause, which is not mandatory.

“Today, Ronald Araujo spoke to the press and said it is too early. He does not know what is going to happen. He is very happy here and feels very comfortable, but he does not know what is going to happen. It is too early.

“And the reality is that Liverpool will decide in 2027 what to do with Ronald Araujo. So, not now, and I am told not even in December or January.

“Liverpool will take their time. They have all the time they need. They are not being forced by anyone to make a decision before they are ready or ahead of schedule. So, the buy option is there for summer 2027. Liverpool will take their time, but the feedback at Liverpool regarding Ronald Araujo is very positive.

“Then again, let's see what decision they make. Also, do not forget the salary. Araujo is not just about the €55 million buy option clause. It is also about his salary. Araujo's salary at Barcelona was huge. I do not like coming here and speaking about salaries in detail, but it is a very big salary.”
