Tottenham Hotspur fans have been frustrated by Destiny Udogie’s inability to stay fit, with the left-back consistently ravaged by injuries over the last two years.
The Italian has endured another injury-hit start to the campaign, limiting him to only five Premier League appearances. The 23-year-old was recently dealing with a minor issue that kept him out of the last couple of games before he returned to action as a substitute in the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace last weekend.
Roberto De Zerbi also recently expressed his frustrations with Destiny Udogie’s fitness issues. He hopes to work with the flying left-back for several weeks in a row.
Udogie’s injury issues have prevented him from fulfilling his huge potential at the club following his excellent start to his time in North London. The 23-year-old’s injury problems have meant that he has only made two Premier League starts, with summer signing Andy Robertson starting most of the matches.
Now, former Spurs left-back Christian Ziege has provided a piece of advice to Udogie to avoid more time on the treatment table. He says that the defender must train consistently before returning to action or risk another spell on the sidelines.
“If you see Destiny Udogie’s history over the last few months, he’s had some problems with his knees and a few other issues. I don’t know the exact reasons for that, but the most important thing if you want to be a real contender and play at the highest level is that you have to be fully fit when you come back,” Christian Ziege exclusively told Standard Sport.
“If you’re not fully fit, it can cause problems, because then you pick up another small, tiny injury. You can’t reach your highest level if you haven’t trained properly or aren’t fully fit, and that leads to more problems.
“So, my advice would always be to get really fit, get ready to play 90 minutes. That’s the best thing you can do; otherwise, you’ll face more setbacks than you deserve.”
The problem with Udogie has never been talent or lack of commitment, but poor fitness levels. He is obviously Spurs’ best left-back option when fully fit and running, and every time he has been able to start this season for the Lilywhites, he has offered a different dimension going forward than Robertson.
However, the fact remains that the Italian international is rarely healthy, and currently, Robertson is making it easier for De Zerbi to avoid the thought of rushing Udogie back. There has been speculation over the Verona-born talent’s future, but recent reports suggest that he is very much part of the North Londoners’ long-term plans and the club are not entertaining the prospect of a sale.
