Everton v Newcastle United early team news: Five doubts & two ruled out of Carabao Cup tie

Everton v Newcastle United team news: There are several injury doubts for the Carabao Cup last 16 tie.

Newcastle United travel to face Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium in the Carabao Cup last-16 on Thursday night.

By that point, the winners will already know who they are facing in the quarter-finals of the competition, with the draw taking place after Liverpool’s clash with Chelsea.

Newcastle have reached at least the quarter-final stage of the Carabao Cup in each of the last four seasons, winning the competition in 2025. Meanwhile, Everton, despite winning nine English league titles, have never won the the competition. The cup meeting comes just days before Newcastle host Everton in the Premier League this coming Monday.

Newcastle United team news

Newcastle will be without goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen and defender Tino Livramento due to respective hamstring and knee injuries. Lewis Miley, who scored in Newcastle’s 4-1 win at the Hill Dickinson Stadium last season, is a doubt with a glute issue while Matias Fernandez-Pardo will be hoping to recover from a recent illness that sidelined him against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Jacob Ramsey and Anthony Elanga returned to the bench and were late substitutes at Selhurst Park, but Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle has strongly suggested the pair are not quite ready to start matches after spells out injured.

On the whole, Newcastle’s injury problems are finally starting to ease with the likes of Joelinton, William Osula, Amar Dedic, Fabian Schar and Dan Burn all coming back into the starting line-up last time out after spells out.

Everton team news

Much like Newcastle, Everton are also sweating on the fitness of two key players. Jack Grealish missed the Toffees’ 2-0 defeat at Arsenal due to illness while Jarrad Branthwaite was absent after suffering a concussion in the previous match against Chelsea.

The defender will be past the initial concussion protocol period by the time Everton face Newcastle but he will only be able to play if his symptoms have fully cleared.

Full-back Vitalii Mykolenko was forced off against Arsenal in the closing stages so is also a doubt.
