Joseph Hungbo free kick could transform Swindon Town

Coming off the bench just before half-time against Rotherham, it was not a vintage Hungbo performance until he stepped up for a late free kick to send the resulting free kick into the top corner and grab Swindon’s second.

Holloway said that he was surprised that Hungbo was even allowed to take the free kick that he stuck into the top corner, but that was the kind of magical moment that he wanted to see from him.

The 26-year-old has been unstoppable when he has been on song, and Holloway wants him to have the confidence to keep trying stuff even when it does not come off, as he proved against The Millers that the piece of brilliance is just around the corner.

He said: “If you are Hungbo and you have just given it away, so what? I don’t care, just go and win it back.

“Stop thinking about what you just got wrong, don’t let that affect the next thing that you do.

“Luckily, he bent one into the top corner, that is what we are wanting him to do.

“That is what Claire is going to be talking to him about. Can you not get caught up with what you have just done that hasn’t gone right?

“We need Joseph to come alive when we do get it to him, and hopefully he will now that he has scored that goal.”

When he has been on the pitch, Hungbo has been very lively, as he has the third-most shot-creating carries per 90 minutes and the fifth-most shots per 90 minutes, and has netted twice from 387 minutes of League Two football.

Holloway hopes that having a big moment like that free kick will help him to push on and offer the impetus that he was signed to provide.

He said: “You probably need two Hungbos: one on the left and one on the right, but we haven’t got that.

“You have got to keep putting yourself up and putting yourself up and putting yourself up, and he did that, so I was delighted for him.

“Hopefully that will give him all sorts of confidence, because that is all that he has ever lacked: his own self-belief.

“We all believe in him, the lads are all bigging him up, and when he starts to get it right, wow, he is going to make a huge difference for us.”
