Australia and South Africa continued their battle for supremacy in the series-deciding third Test at Newlands in Cape Town, with the visitors looking to build a commanding first-innings lead on Day 3. However, veteran off-spinner Simon Harmer delivered a crucial breakthrough by dismissing centurion Josh Inglis for 102 runs, ending a dangerous partnership and shifting the momentum back towards the Proteas.

Inglis had produced a determined counter-attacking performance despite playing with a fractured right index finger. His departure proved significant for Australia, particularly as Harmer followed it up by removing Alex Carey for 80, giving the hosts a timely opportunity to fight their way back into the contest.

The dismissal came on the sixth delivery of the 99th over when Harmer produced a teasing delivery outside off stump. Getting the ball to drift away from the batter, the South African spinner bowled on a fuller length and invited Inglis to play at it. Having spent considerable time at the crease, the Australian wicketkeeper-batter attempted to defend the delivery with hard hands. However, he failed to control his shot, producing a thin edge that travelled through to wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton.

Rickelton reacted quickly and completed a sharp catch behind the stumps, bringing Inglis’ impressive innings to an end at 102. The right-hander appeared to anticipate more turn than the delivery offered, allowing Harmer to exploit the slightest misjudgement.

The wicket was a reward for Harmer’s persistence, as he had worked hard to contain Inglis and challenge his footwork throughout the partnership. His breakthrough also gave South Africa renewed belief after Australia had managed to establish a strong position.

Inglis’ century was particularly impressive considering the circumstances surrounding his selection. He entered Australia’s playing XI as a last-minute replacement for the injured Steve Smith and had to manage a fractured right index finger protected by a splint.

Despite these challenges, the wicketkeeper-batter demonstrated excellent composure and adaptability against South Africa’s spin-heavy attack. Although he initially found it difficult to settle, Inglis gradually adjusted his approach and began putting pressure on the bowlers.

He frequently used his feet to disrupt Harmer’s rhythm and was not afraid to attack when opportunities presented themselves. One of his standout shots was a powerful hit over deep midwicket for six, showcasing his ability to take on the spinners. Inglis also employed the sweep selectively, combining calculated aggression with patient strike rotation to keep Australia’s innings moving.

Resuming Day 3 unbeaten on 85, Inglis showed patience before reaching his century with a boundary through a reverse sweep off Harmer. His innings provided Australia with valuable runs and helped establish a substantial partnership with Carey. However, Harmer’s dismissal of Inglis changed the atmosphere at Newlands. The off-spinner then removed Carey for 80, delivering another major blow to Australia’s middle order.
