Celta Vigo Confirm Major Blow Ahead of Celtic Park Clash

Celta Vigo will be without World Cup-winning striker Borja Iglesias for Thursday night’s Europa League meeting with Celtic.

The Spanish club have confirmed that Iglesias is expected to spend approximately six weeks on the sidelines after suffering an injury in training.

An MRI scan revealed a myotendinous tear in the soleus muscle of his left leg.

Iglesias felt a sharp pain during Tuesday’s session and has now started a recovery programme under the supervision of Celta’s medical staff.

The timeframe provided in Celta Vigo’s official medical update definitively rules him out of the trip to Celtic Park.

The 33-year-old’s absence is a significant blow for Claudio Giráldez’s side.

Iglesias was Celta’s leading goalscorer last season before helping Spain win the World Cup during the summer.

His campaign has since been disrupted by recurring fitness issues, and this latest setback is expected to keep him unavailable until near the end of November.

Celta will also travel to Glasgow without former Celtic defender Carl Starfelt.

Carl Starfelt

The Swedish international suffered an injury while representing his country earlier this month, with national-team manager Graham Potter admitting afterwards that the initial signs did not look encouraging.

As we previously reported, Spanish reports suggested Starfelt could be sidelined for around one month.

That means the defender will miss the opportunity to play at Celtic Park for the first time since leaving the Hoops in 2023.

Starfelt made 87 appearances during his time in Glasgow and formed an important defensive partnership with Cameron Carter-Vickers under Ange Postecoglou.

The double injury blow offers Celtic some encouragement ahead of an important European night.

Martin O’Neill’s side have lost their opening two Europa League fixtures against Ferencváros and Benfica, leaving them under immediate pressure to collect points.
