A second-half strike from Italian midfielder Issa Doumbia secured a 1-0 victory for Sporting CP over Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk in London on Tuesday. Stamford Bridge, loaned by Chelsea to host the Champions League encounter, bore witness to a refreshed Sporting side under interim manager Tiago Fernandes, who implemented a clean break from the approach of the recently sacked Rui Borges.

Fernandes rang the changes tactically, consigning key figures of the Borges era to the bench, including Spain international Ivan Fresneda. The Portuguese outfit initially struggled for attacking rhythm, largely stifled by the Ukrainian champions' relentless pressing. Clear-cut openings were at a premium during a disjointed first half, though Shakhtar held a slight edge courtesy of their physical intensity and the craft of Alisson Santana and Marlon Gomes, both recently summoned to the Brazil squad by Carlo Ancelotti.

Following a fragmented opening period, both sides played with far greater fluency after the interval, and Sporting found their breakthrough on 59 minutes through Doumbia. At the end of an intricate attacking move, Shakhtar defender Pedro Henrique cut out Silas Andersen's pass intended for Colombian forward Luis Suarez, only for the loose ball to fall kindly to Doumbia, who rolled it into an empty net.

Andersen—the standout performer on the pitch—then combined neatly with Suarez and nearly orchestrated a second. At the other end, goalkeeper Rui Silva kept Shakhtar at bay by smothering a low Alisson set piece, before the Brazilian winger threatened again moments later, seeing his stinging effort crash against the post and bounce to safety.

Shakhtar Donetsk, managed by former Barcelona and Atletico Madrid midfielder Arda Turan, threw men forward in search of an equaliser, but Sporting held firm to get their European campaign back on track following a 3-2 home defeat to Austrian side LASK Linz. Sporting travel to Manchester United on 25 November for their next continental assignment, while Shakhtar host Fenerbahce on the same date.
