Tottenham Receive £7m Goalkeeper Boost: Was Vicario Exit The Right Call?

Tottenham transfer news: Spurs have finally found some stability between the posts after spending several seasons searching for the right goalkeeper. Roberto De Zerbi’s arrival in March brought a different approach, with distribution, composure and decision-making becoming central to his defensive structure.

Antonín Kinský has responded particularly well. The Czech international has established himself as Tottenham’s first-choice goalkeeper, while Martin Dúbravka provides experienced cover following his summer arrival. Brandon Austin remains another option, with the academy graduate contracted until 2029. Spurs therefore have little immediate reason to revisit their goalkeeping department.

That stability has coincided with improved performances elsewhere. Tottenham defeated Crystal Palace 2-0 on October 31, recording their third consecutive Premier League victory. De Zerbi’s side enjoyed 80 per cent possession, while Kinský continued operating within a system that demands confidence on the ball. His ability to distribute under pressure has strengthened the argument for maintaining the current hierarchy rather than introducing another senior goalkeeper.

Against that backdrop, developments in Italy have offered Tottenham an encouraging financial opportunity. According to Sport Witness, Sean Lunt reports that Juventus have become convinced by Guglielmo Vicario and increasingly intend to make his loan permanent.

The 30-year-old joined Tottenham from Empoli in June 2023 for approximately £16 million and made 117 appearances, keeping 29 clean sheets. However, he never completely established himself as the undisputed number one, prompting his departure after expressing a desire to leave London.

Juventus initially considered several experienced options, including Liverpool’s Alisson, before securing Vicario on a free loan until June 30, 2027. His performances have subsequently convinced the Italian hierarchy. Across 12 appearances and 1,080 minutes this season, the Italy international has conceded 13 goals and kept five clean sheets.

The proposed permanent transfer would cost Juventus approximately £7 million, excluding bonuses worth another £1.7 million. With Neto and Carlo Pinsoglio potentially leaving next summer, Vicario could become their established starter and mentor for younger goalkeepers.

Tottenham transfer news: Did Tottenham make a mistake accepting £7m for Vicario?

Absolutely not. Tottenham originally invested approximately £16 million, so the permanent transfer would represent a financial loss before bonuses. However, retaining an unhappy goalkeeper would create unnecessary complications for De Zerbi, particularly when Kinský already suits his possession-based approach.

Juventus have offered Vicario an environment where his shot-stopping qualities can remain valuable without forcing Tottenham to compromise their tactical priorities. Moreover, removing his wages from the books would provide additional flexibility for future recruitment, although his exact salary remains undisclosed.

For Spurs, the real benefit lies in maintaining Kinský’s development, protecting the goalkeeping hierarchy and converting an unsuccessful investment into approximately £7 million in guaranteed transfer income. Keeping Vicario simply because Tottenham once paid more would have been poor recruitment planning.
