The Man Utd academy continues to shine away from the first-team, and Jaume Camacho’s poker against Liverpool shouldn’t detract from his wonderkid teammate hitting the ground running.
It was a great day for the academy as Man Utd’s U18s thrashed Liverpool 6-3, courtesy of a four-goal haul by wonderkid Jaume Camacho.
Messi and Ronaldo RUINED the Ballon d'Or
Camacho continues his meteoric rise at Carrington that will excite Man Utd fans, but even beyond him, this batch of youngsters is really starting to come into their own.
The latest addition could be the most exciting one yet, as United’s marquee signing from Man City also hit the ground running against Liverpool.
United’s transfer window for the first team was an abomination, but they continued to recruit the finest young talents in England for the academy.
Isaac Konde from Liverpool, and David Eze and Karim Cassim from Man City completed a trio of exciting players who chose United ahead of their rivals.
Cassim is a particularly exciting prospect due to his silky and combative playing style in midfield, and he showcased it finely against Liverpool.
United have high hopes the central midfielder can reach the first team
Welcome to the biggest club in Manchester.
Good luck - always good to have more additions, looking forward to seeing him contribute at academy level
Cassim ran the show from a deeper position against Liverpool, taking the ball under pressure, evading challenges, and getting United moving up the pitch,
He found runners to show his range of passing, while keeping the ball circulating to take the sting out of Liverpool’s game when the situation demanded.
Two assists were a well-deserved contribution from Cassim, who also showed that he has the ability to play further forward if necessary, due to his eye for the goal and confidence in the final third.
Expect Cassim to play with the U18s for a few games as he gets settled into his new surroundings at Carrington, but he’s already showing immense potential as a future first-team prospect.
It’s all fine and well to recruit youngsters and see them dominate for the academy sides to vindicate their signing, but Man Utd can’t get the next step right.
The likes of Samuel Lusale, Enzo Kana-Biyik, Tynan Thompson, Diego Leon, Cristian Orozco, Sekou Kone, and Chido Obi are so far away from the first team that it’s indefensible.
Obi, in particular, was the marquee signing for the academy, and he can’t get games for a relegation-bound Dutch League side this season.
United can’t find good loans or provide a proper first-team pathway to these wonderkids. In the absence of pathways and broken promises, recruiting youngsters will soon become more difficult.
After all, there are only so many times you can point to Ayden Heaven as a success story.
Even his success is seemingly despite Man Utd’s best efforts instead of because of the club’s handling. They need to get this right otherwise, wonderkids like Cassim will only be limited to shining in the U18s.
