Wrexham star James: Back problem can flare up any time

The experienced midfielder suffered the injury setback during the recent international break and missed two Championship games but made his comeback when he started Wrexham's much-needed 4-1 win against bottom of the table Preston North End at The Racecourse on Saturday

"It's a long-standing issue that I have and sometimes it flares up," said the 35-year-old ahead of tomorrow's clash against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.

"I finished the session and it was the next day that I really struggled.

"I had an injection on the Friday which took me out of the Saturday and the Tuesday games, then I started to build back up by doing a little bit of individual work on the grass, making progress, so we'll see how I react.

"I'm happy to push things but at the same time, you've got to make sure that you are able to push it without it being too inhibiting."

James admitted watching from the stands was one of the toughest parts of the recovery process.

"I'm not a good one, never have been," he said. "I love playing and I don't like missing games.

"I know it's only a small kind of period, but I'm not a big fan of watching when it's my own team."

Wrexham have made a slow start to the season, although victory over Preston took the Reds up to 14th position with 14 points from 11 games.

James believes injuries have disrupted the Reds' rhythm in the early stages of the campaign but he feels there is more to come from Phil Parkinson's side once players return to action.

"The start last year was pretty similar," he said.

"It's been a little bit stop-start with certain players that are creative players and have probably not got the game time, got the training time, with injuries that have took longer in terms of the damage that they have done.

"Hopefully it's a big positive for us that players are going to start coming back and then obviously the aim is to keep them because we want the best players on the pitch."

The Championship table is congested but James feels Wrexham are well-placed to make their move.

"The Championship has always been like that, it's so tight," he added.

"If you're in that middle pack, you can always be so close to the bottom but you can also be so close to the play-off positions, and with the play-off positions being two more this year, you're a little bit more within touching distance of that.

"I think for us it's just focus on the next game."
