Liverpool was unable to lay down a marker in the Premier League, falling to a 1-0 defeat against Arsenal at Anfield. In the first match that the Gunners have won in that stadium since 2012, Kai Havertz scored the only goal of the game.
Andoni Iraola's men pushed for the equalizer but were unable to find it. And with Arsenal defending doggedly, there were no real chances for Alexander Isak. Bradley Barcola had started well, but he and Florian Wirtz faded in the second half.
What next for the two sides, though, with each looking to continue building some momentum? With a gap of nine points in the table right now, Liverpool is playing catch-up, though it is broadly on track with where it expected to be.
This is how Liverpool's next run of games looks in comparison to the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City, two of the sides currently ahead of them in the standings.
Liverpool's next five league games: Crystal Palace (A), Man Utd (H), Everton (A), Sunderland (H), Chelsea (A)
Liverpool.com says: No game in the Premier League is straightforward, but the Reds should be looking to win the majority of these fixtures. Ending the period between the international breaks with a victory at Selhurst Park would be big.
Iraola's side is looking to cement itself in the Champions League spots and continuing its recent consistency will be vital. With a bit of breathing space in Europe thanks to previous wins, this is the priority.
Arsenal's next five league games: Hull (H), Newcastle (A), Man City (H), Brentford (A), Tottenham (A)
Liverpool.com says: With a slightly harder set of fixtures than Liverpool, the Gunners are set for more tests. After Hull, there are some games there where an argument for dropped points can be made.
It can go one of two ways, though. Win four of five of these games and Arsenal will have an easier run around the corner. Mikel Arteta's side will be there or thereabouts in the end.
