Chelsea have spent heavily on attacking talent, yet their January priorities should reflect the squad they already own. Xabi Alonso’s side sit fourth in the Premier League with 13 points from seven matches, and arrivals have left several young forwards competing for minutes.
Morgan Rogers cost £117 million, while Chelsea paid £43 million for Marco Palestra and £40 million for Geovany Quenda. Pedro Neto and Jamie Gittens remain options on the left, while Estêvão continues his development. Alejandro Garnacho and Mykhailo Mudryk are already out on loan, making another wide signing difficult to justify.
Still, a Portuguese attacker has caught the recruitment team’s attention. CaughtOffside reports that Chelsea are considering an offer of around £43 million for Sporting CP winger Flávio Gonçalves in January. The report says Sporting have opened talks over a new contract that would raise his release clause to around £86 million.
The 19-year-old has started the 2026/27 campaign with three goals and one assist in seven Liga Portugal appearances across 427 minutes. He has featured twice in the Champions League and completed 83 per cent of his passes. Gonçalves starts from the left before cutting inside, where his close control and passing can help break down compact defences.
Gonçalves has the technical qualities to develop into an attacker, but Chelsea must consider his route into the first team. Neto, Gittens, Estêvão and Quenda already offer Alonso several choices across the wide positions, while Palmer and Rogers can create from inside channels.
A £43 million January bid would look like a long-term investment rather than an immediate fix. Sporting have little incentive to sell a young player under contract until 2030, particularly if they can raise his release clause. No weekly wage figure has been reported, so Chelsea must assess the full cost before making an offer.
The Blues should pursue Gonçalves only if they plan a path into the senior side or expect another winger to leave. Otherwise, that money would serve the squad better in an area with fewer established options.
