Ibrox Noise remains not only mildly outraged by Thelo Aasgaard Rangers comments today, but by the fact that he actually made them.
Thelo Aasgaard, as we alluded to in our entry earlier about the Norwegian international, has of course joined Anderlecht, with admittedly a modest level of minutes. He has hardly had the breakthrough that his departure was hoping to create.
The part that we don’t quite get is why he made such a shortsighted and rather arrogant comment about Rangers and indeed his new club when he’s only on loan.
The chances are that Aasgaard will be coming back to Rangers in the summer. He will have to improve his game considerably to persuade the Belgian giants to shell out cash to sign him.
Look at Kosta Nedeljkovic for Rangers. He is not exactly impressing at the moment. It’s touch and go as to whether the signing will be made permanent. The same applies to Ben Godfrey, of course, and Badredine Bouanani.
Time will tell if these guys do manage to make the cut and get their deals made permanent. And that’s the situation facing Aasgaard, and as yet he’s hardly impressed in the Jupiler Pro League.
So why he came out and suggested that he needed a change in his career, having only been at Ibrox for 10 plus months, is unknown.
The fact is his language and tone should have been much, much more careful. If he wanted to impress his new team, he should have impressed them without denigrating his current employer.
Rangers are still Thelo Aasgaard’s current employer, whether he likes it or not.
The move to Belgium itself came out of the blue. It’s safe to say that Aasgaard was playing quite a heavy role in Rangers’ team. That is to say, the boy was starting a lot and he was indeed quite heavily involved. Whether or not he was impressive was another matter.
So for him to suggest that he was stale at Rangers and needed a change in his career really is a very bizarre comment to make.
It was thanks to Rangers and the exposure he got that he made it into the Norwegian national side. Of course, the reaction back home to the selection for the Norwegians was hardly positive. But nevertheless he did have one half decent match in a dead rubber and then a cameo in the quarters.
But the point is that Aasgaard has rather burned his bridges with Rangers at this point. For Ibrox Noise anyway.
We know that many fans will still back him up. They will always back up anything that criticises or annoys Rangers.
That is to say, anything antagonistic/disrespectful about the club from any of our (current or former) players tends to strangely be supported by a whole new breed of fans who are quite happy and indeed endorsing of negative comments towards the club.
But nevertheless, for Ibrox Noise, it’s not good enough, and Aasgaard has proven himself to be very misguided in his media comments to his new club.
Maybe if he’d actually scored a goal or got an assist by this point, he might have had some merit.
But time will tell if he is indeed a success, and then Thelo Aasgaard Rangers comments won’t matter and we can just sell him.
