Jamie Carragher has sided with Gary Neville in calling out Alexis Mac Allister, having branded the Liverpool midfielder “embarrassing” after the defeat to Arsenal.
Mac Allister was involved in a flashpoint during the second half which saw the Argentina international confronted by Arsenal’s players. The incident was sparked when he shouted at Martin Odegaard and slapped the back of the Gunners captain’s head after Liverpool conceded a free-kick in the second half.
Jurrien Timber and Noni Madueke were clearly unhappy with Mac Allister’s reaction, with the latter going head-to-head with him, which led to the Reds star going down clutching his face.
Despite the incident, Madueke avoided being sent off, with VAR deciding not to intervene by suggesting a red card, while referee Andy Madley also decided against issuing a second yellow to the winger, with Mac Allister and Timber instead going into the book.
Former Manchester United captain Neville, who was commentating on the game for Sky Sports, branded Mac Allister’s behavior as “embarrassing”, with Carragher also taking aim at the midfielder at full-time.
“I wanted Liverpool to win the game, but I’m delighted he [Madueke] never got sent off there,” Carragher said. “We have really got to be strong calling people out and just saying, ‘this is embarrassing’.
“It’s got to stop. It’s ridiculous. I said it a couple of weeks ago with a similar sort of thing, I can’t stand it. I think everybody in the country watching football, this head-to-head stuff... if someone puts their head back and butts, of course, red card.
“But this stuff about head to head and if someone touches the other one goes down and the player gets sent off, as a game, as football, people in the Premier League, supporters, call your own people out for it.
“I’m a Liverpool fan. That is a joke from Mac Allister. It’s got to stop. People are trying to gain this advantage because they know they can. Because red cards are getting given for it.
Get Liverpool's new 2026/27 home kit
Liverpool FC have launched their new home kit for the 2026/27, inspired by iconic adidas strip worn during the club's 1989/90 title-winning campaign.
“Whether it’s from Howard Webb, the Premier League, the managers get together, stop getting red cards for this crap.”
It’s not the first time Mac Allister has been called out by Carragher like that, with the former Liverpool defender having also criticized the midfielder for his reaction following a similar incident against Aston Villa last season.
Carragher again branded the 27-year-old “embarrassing” following his altercation with Ezri Konsa, who has now come out on the winning side after both incidents, having made the move to Arsenal from Villa during the summer.
