The Bengals could use an upgrade at safety, and Chargers All-Pro Derwin James presents a compelling fit despite major contract obstacles.
The Cincinnati Bengals have made one blockbuster defensive trade this year.
Could an additional move like that happen before the NFL trade deadline?
Assuming Cincinnati wants to explore an ambitious go at safety, Los Angeles Chargers star Derwin James would be a name to consider.
The Bengals have dealt with injuries to Bryan Cook and Kyle Dugger, while Jordan Battle has experienced a tricky start despite intercepting two passes against the Miami Dolphins.
James would provide a boost to defensive coordinator Al Golden's secondary, with the five-time Pro Bowler having versatility as a deep safety, slot defender and occasional pass rusher to work as a weapon alongside Cook.
The Chargers signed him to a three-year, $75.6 million extension in May, paying him an average of $25.2 million annually across the new years. His $17.5 million salary for 2027 is fully guaranteed.
Los Angeles lost to the Kansas City Chiefs to stand at 0-6, surfacing questions about what direction the franchise might take ahead of the deadline.
A trade wouldn't be impossible financially. Per Over the Cap, James carries an $11.5 million base salary in 2026, meaning Cincinnati may inherit approximately $7.7 million in remaining salary if it acquired him after Week 6. However, his fully guaranteed $17.5 million salary in 2027 would present a long-term financial obstacle.
As far as his performance has gone, James has earned a 60.9 overall defensive grade from Pro Football Focus this season, ranking 45th among 93 qualifying safeties. His 77.9 run-defense grade ranks 19th at the position, although his 50.8 coverage grade ranks just 65th.
James also missed his third consecutive game Sunday because of a hamstring injury, marking another concern for any potential buyer. And the Chargers have given no indication they're willing to move their defensive leader.
Although this would be an expensive shot, it's a run-defending fit that could work for a team aiming to strengthen its defense before a challenging AFC North stretch ahead.
