Arsenal are preparing to enter the race for one of European football's most prolific young forwards, with Mikel Arteta's side reportedly making an early move to establish their interest. Gustavo Varela has become one of the standout performers of the season, with his exploits in Italy putting several heavyweight clubs on alert.
The 21-year-old has taken Serie A by storm since joining Monza, producing a remarkable return of nine goals in as many league appearances. That puts him level with Manchester City's Erling Haaland in terms of goals in the league this season, an extraordinary achievement for a player representing a side currently struggling near the bottom of the table.
Varela's overall contribution has been just as impressive, with 11 goals in 10 appearances across all competitions. Monza have managed only two victories from those games and currently occupy a relegation place, making the Portuguese forward's performances even more eye-catching.
It's claimed Arsenal have already made a formal enquiry regarding the Portugal Under-21 international. Barcelona and Napoli are also believed to be following his development, although the Gunners are among the first clubs to have expressed a tangible interest, according to Portuguese outlet A Bola.
Varela's outstanding form has now earned him recognition on the international stage, too. The forward received his maiden call-up to the senior Portugal squad on Friday, marking another major step forward in his career. It is quite the turnaround for a player who was considered surplus to requirements at Benfica just months ago.
Monza only brought Varela to Italy during the summer, agreeing a reported €2million (£1.7m) deal with Benfica. That fee is already looking like a bargain given the striker's subsequent performances. His valuation has climbed to €5m (£4.2m), according to Transfermarkt, although Monza are unlikely to entertain offers anywhere near that figure.
Indeed, the Serie A outfit are understood to want at least £33m for their prized asset, with some reports suggesting their demands could reach £42m. They are also reluctant to let him leave during the January transfer window. With Monza battling to avoid relegation, parting company with their leading goalscorer halfway through the season would hardly make sporting sense.
Such demands could present a considerable obstacle for Arsenal as they weigh up potential additions to their forward line. Despite spending £64m on Viktor Gyokeres just over a year ago, Arteta is reportedly keen to examine the market for further attacking reinforcements.

The north London club were among the sides linked with Julian Alvarez over the summer, but ultimately refused to meet Atletico Madrid's reported valuation of more than £120m. Varela would undoubtedly be a more affordable proposition, although Monza's potential demands would still make any deal a substantial financial commitment.
There is plenty to explain Arsenal's reported interest. His goalscoring exploits point towards a forward with a natural ability to find the net, while his age offers the prospect of significant improvement over the coming years.
However, his relatively limited experience at the highest level would inevitably raise questions. Varela has enjoyed an exceptional opening to life in one of Europe's major leagues, but sustaining that form across an entire campaign is another challenge altogether. A move to Arsenal would also bring greater pressure, heightened expectations and considerably stronger competition for a starting place.
Gyokeres and Kai Havertz are already available to Arteta as central striking options, meaning the Portuguese youngster would not necessarily arrive with an immediate guarantee of regular first-team football. He could instead be required to develop his game while initially occupying a supporting role.
Even so, Arsenal will be aware that opportunities to recruit emerging talents before their value increases further can be difficult to ignore. With Barcelona and Napoli also keeping watch, the Gunners may have to move decisively if they want to turn their reported interest into something more concrete.
Monza's hefty valuation and determination to retain their forward in January could make negotiations complicated. But Varela's remarkable goalscoring exploits have ensured that his name is firmly on the radar of some of Europe's biggest clubs.
