Kimi Antonelli Tightens Grip on World Championship Following United States Grand Prix Triumph

A dominant one-stop victory in Austin puts the Mercedes driver on the verge of claiming the 2026 Drivers’ title.

Kimi Antonelli took a decisive step toward clinching his maiden Formula 1 Drivers' Championship with a commanding victory at the United States Grand Prix

The championship leader executed an inspired one-stop strategy to hold off Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen across 56 laps at Circuit of The Americas

While resilient drives from Lewis Hamilton and George Russell kept the title battle alive Antonelli secured his ninth win of the season to place the crown within reach

Formula 1 championship leader Kimi Antonelli stands on the brink of his first World Championship title following a dominant victory at the United States Grand Prix.

Entering the Circuit of The Americas with an outside mathematical shot to wrap up the Drivers’ Championship outright, Antonelli needed a race victory alongside George Russell placing ninth or lower and Lewis Hamilton finishing outside the top four. Although Hamilton’s fourth-place recovery and Russell’s eighth-place effort kept the title chase active heading into the next round, Antonelli capitalized on a flawless Sunday drive to establish an overwhelming advantage at the top of the standings.

Starting from pole position after what team principal Toto Wolff described as a “miracle lap,” the Italian secured the lead into Turn 1 as front-row rival Max Verstappen struggled with early deployment issues. While Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull committed to two-stop strategies, Antonelli stretched his opening stint on medium compound tires before switching to hard tires on Lap 24. Managing tire degradation through backmarker traffic and a late Virtual Safety Car triggered by Valtteri Bottas’ Cadillac, Antonelli crossed the finish line 13.078 seconds clear of second-placed Charles Leclerc and third-placed Verstappen.

“It was the result we needed,” Antonelli stated after securing his ninth win of the season. “The whole team deserve it so much and all this time putting in so much work on bringing this new package and finally seeing the result is very pleasant and it was also perfect execution from strategy to call the one-stop so I’m really happy we made it stick and it was a great team effort.”

Antonelli will have his next opportunity to seal the Drivers’ Championship at the Mexico City Grand Prix, taking place at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez from October 30 to November 1.
