Bayern Munich defender Jonathan Tah has singled out Arsenal star Kai Havertz for praise ahead of the meeting between the two clubs on Wednesday night.

Tah played alongside Havertz at Bayer Leverkusen and, speaking about his former club teammate before facing him in the Champions League fixture, the centre-back said:

“Kai is my friend of ten years. Great character, amazing player, a player who is still underestimated, to be fair.”

“I don’t think he gets the appreciation he deserves. We already talked about the game. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Havertz is a “moments” player

One of the main reasons why the 27-year-old is “still underestimated”, as Tah mentions, is due to his inconsistency.

Havertz is capable of moments of magic, scoring big goals in big games, but he can also go missing, as he did against Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

When you lead the line as Havertz does, he will be judged by his performances week in, week out, and he just doesn’t produce the numbers. Chelsea were willing to sell him for £65m three years ago for that reason.

On his day, though, the German international is a very difficult player to stop. Like Tah, manager Mikel Arteta is also a big fan, having recently described him as being “five seconds ahead of the game” due to his intelligence. The Spaniard believes he brings the best out of his teammates as a result.

Are Arsenal looking for an upgrade up front?

Reports earlier this week suggested that the Gunners are weighing up a potential move for Club Brugge’s Nicolo Tresoldi. However, the 22-year-old would not be brought in to replace Havertz.

Viktor Gyokeres has started the season poorly for his club, despite scoring 4 goals in 4 games for his country, and there is a chance he could leave the Emirates in the New Year, with Tresoldi among the options to replace him.
