Stoke City loan watch as manager gives glowing review of 'such a talented lad'
Favour Fawunmi is on a season-long loan at Oldham Athletic from Stoke City.
A bad day for Darmstadt and Milan Smit as they were beaten 4-0 at Karlsruhe and the wait goes on for the first away point of the season.
Manager Florian Kohfeldt had no excuses. "That was obviously a well-deserved home win for Karlsruhe (KSC). There's no point in beating around the bush. It was a performance I didn't see coming at all. "After the very good second half against Cottbus, we had a very good week of training, but we didn't translate much of that onto the pitch. "To be fair, every shot they had on goal at the beginning was a goal, but we also contributed to that to some extent ourselves. KSC were courageous, KSC were intense, KSC pressed us. They did that well. We couldn't find the spaces, and when we did, we didn't create any chances from them. "It's not that everything is consistently bad for us, but we have incredible fluctuations in performance. This was a clear dip. And we'll certainly be discussing that internally in the coming days. But there's really no way to explain how we performed. We have to be honest about that."
Nathan Lowe has picked up what has been described as "a mid-term injury" at Hibernian.
New Hibs boss Marink Reedijk said: "Nathan Lowe got an injury from the (Dundee United) match. The same goes for Jacob Devaney, he got an injury through his red card, an unfortunate one, and Callum Wright is also out. “I don't know how bad they are yet. The first signs from Callum I cannot say yet because it happened late in the week. Nathan and Jacob are mid-term, I think. I'm not a doctor so it's around a few weeks I think.”
Tommy Simkin and Doncaster Rovers were on the wrong side of a tight game against Leicester City in League One.
Doncaster manager Grant McCann said: “I'd have loved to win the game for (more than 2,000 travelling fans). I felt like we had a really good chance if we didn’t conceded that goal on the stroke at half-time."
Emre Tezgel's brace for Wycombe Wanderers in a 4-1 Jersey Mike's Trophy win over Bristol Rovers hasn't earned him many more minutes in League One.
Tom Hounsell, who has been appointed as permanent new manager to replace Michael Duff, told the Bucks Free Press last week: “Tez has worked tirelessly over the last couple of weeks. I've been really pleased with him in training and he's waited for his opportunity."
Favour Fawunmi was instrumental in Oldham's 4-1 win over Cheltenham in League Two. The 20-year-old scored one and set up two others while also hitting the post with another shot.
Manager Micky Mellon said: “He was brilliant and he’s such a talented lad. We’re pleased to have him here. “He ran out of steam four or five games ago as we felt he was jaded and who had probably hit the Football League with a big rack of games and done a lot of speed running which had started to affect him. It was the same for Kane [Drummond], but now they look fresh and full of passion for the game and the two of them gave really good accounts of themselves. “They looked like they ran out of stamina [near the end] which we will work on that. If they are to become top players, top, top players have stamina and keep going. To be fair both are very new to the Football League and both learning. The next stage of their careers is going to be important.”
In a separate interview, with the Oldham Times, Mellon talked about Fawunmi's development. He said: "Fawunmi is such a talent. What we need to work on is his stamina and when things need to be organised, I just spoke to the two experienced midfield players, they have got to manage him, they've got to tell him when to go to the ball and when to sit off because it's really important when teams are having a couple of extra passes, you've got to get to the ball from a good shape and when you get to the ball you've got to believe you can win it back. "We just became a bit stretched. It's a hard shift playing in wide areas and to do all that running and do it all the time. But imagine what they would be like if we can get the stamina levels up. We want them to be effective for 90 minutes."
True Grant helped Halifax Town reach the FA Cup first round proper, beating South Shields 3-2. He had to make a fine save to stop Cedwyn Scott at close range in the second-half.
Syd Agina and Gabriel Kelly will not be joining him as Tamworth lost 2-1 to Carlisle in the fourth qualifying round. Both players were used from the bench
Ruben Curley got an assist as Morecambe's FA Cup run came to an end with a 2-1 defeat at Rushden and Diamonds. He picked out Joe Garner at the start of the second half but the Shrimps couldn't find an equaliser.
