Tottenham Hotspur’s masterclass in a 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge completely unraveled Chelsea’s composure, culminating in a red card for Blues midfielder Cole Palmer. However, according to former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett, speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Palmer’s disciplinary nightmare might not end with a standard one-match suspension.
Palmer was originally dismissed after receiving two yellow cards for fouls on Mateus Fernandes and Conor Gallagher. Yet, expert analysis suggests the England international’s actions warranted a much heavier punishment, with critics highlighting petulant behavior throughout the fixture as Spurs dominated their rivals in West London.
According to Hackett, the officiating team and VAR missed severe infractions during the heated derby encounter. Breaking down the first incident, Hackett insisted:
“Cole Palmer should have been show a straight red for an off the ball violent conduct.”
Elaborating on the clash involving Mateus Fernandes, the former referee added:
“His opponent was literally on his knees when Palmer used his knee and body in a clear violent act. I am disappointed that when Chris Kavanagh showed Palmer a yellow card, there was no action taken by VAR. Once again we witness the petulance of Palmer.”
The frustration compounded minutes later when Palmer pressed his studs into Conor Gallagher’s ankle, completing his dismissal and leaving Chelsea to finish the match with ten men.
Because of the nature of the challenges, Hackett believes the authorities must take further retrospective action against the playmaker. Hackett continued:
“He committed two red cards and I hope that the review panel will look at both these challenges and enforce a higher level of suspension than one game.”
As Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham side move forward with immense momentum from their statement away win, Chelsea are left licking their wounds while facing the prospect of losing their star creator for a significantly longer spell. The stark contrast between Spurs’ disciplined tactical execution and Chelsea’s unraveling discipline underlines just how thoroughly Tottenham dismantled their hosts on a historic evening.
