Celtic have been battered in Europe this season, but the latest Europa League attendance rankings show just how much interest their matches continue to attract.

Martin O’Neill’s side have lost their opening two matches against Ferencvaros and Benfica, conceding seven goals without collecting a point.

A damning new prediction for Celtic’s Europa League campaign has made grim reading for supporters hoping to see their team progress beyond the league phase.

What are your thoughts on the criticism Martin O’Neill is receiving? Is it justified? 🤔

Celtic feature in two of Europa League’s seven biggest attendances

Figures published by Football Meets Data show Celtic have featured in two of the seven highest-attended Europa League matches of the 2026/27 season.

Benfica’s 4-1 victory over Celtic attracted 58,870 supporters to the Estádio da Luz, the fifth-highest attendance in the competition.

Celtic’s 3-1 home defeat to Ferencvaros attracted 48,223 supporters, placing it seventh. That’s a combined 107,093 spectators across Celtic’s opening two European fixtures.

The Parkhead attendance was also higher than the crowds recorded for Sunderland against AZ Alkmaar (45,555) and Juventus against NEC Nijmegen (41,407).

AC Milan’s meeting with Benfica tops the rankings with 68,393 spectators.

Celtic’s European crowds deserve better than what O’Neill’s side are delivering

Benfica have a huge home support of their own, so their attendance cannot be credited solely to Celtic’s visit.

The Parkhead figure is particularly striking. Celtic attracted 6,816 more spectators than Juventus managed for their home match against NEC.

It’s also worth remembering that Celtic achieved that attendance against Ferencvaros, rather than one of the bigger names in European football.

There was no shortage of backing from the stands. The problem was Celtic’s inability to deal with the Hungarian champions, who left Glasgow with all three points.

O’Neill cannot complain about the support his players are receiving. Nearly 50,000 turned up for the Ferencvaros match and watched Celtic suffer another damaging European defeat.

The attendance figures are impressive. Celtic’s performances have been anything but.
