Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders made his Premier League debut last Saturday in the Blues’ 2-0 win against Everton.
Penders came on in the second half, replacing Emiliano Martinez, who had to come off after fracturing his jaw. In doing so, Penders became the youngest goalkeeper to play for Chelsea in the Premier League.
A broken jaw is expected to keep Martinez out for 45-60 days…
The 21-year-old is now set to start against Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend, and some of Chelsea’s league rivals are likely to keep an eye on him.
According to Si Phillips Talks Chelsea, Brentford, Brighton & Hove Albion, Bournemouth and Everton are all interested in Penders. Chelsea also have an interest in one of Bournemouth’s players, Alex Scott.
Bournemouth were determined to keep hold of Scott, but they now appear to be open to selling the midfielder in January. Chelsea are thought to be frontrunners for his signature.
As for Penders, it is very unlikely that the young Belgian will be allowed to join Bournemouth or any other club on a permanent deal. Chelsea have high hopes for Penders, and as everyone saw at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, injuries happen.
Xabi Alonso will be reluctant to lose a very capable No.2 like Penders. And if the former Genk man impresses in Martinez’s absence, perhaps he will be in with a shot of overtaking his teammate.
