Manchester City’s search for a settled right-back has become more pressing after consecutive Premier League defeats, the latest a 1-0 loss to Brighton. Enzo Maresca’s side started the campaign strongly and remains among the leading contenders, but those setbacks have raised questions about the squad’s balance as the Italian look to change a team that lost multiple long-serving figures during the summer.
Maresca has used Matheus Nunes on the right, with Rico Lewis and Abdukodir Khusanov providing alternative options. However, none has established himself as the specialist first choice. That is quite significant because Maresca expects his full-backs to recognise when to hold their position, move into midfield or cover the space behind an advancing winger. City still lack a settled option who can perform those duties consistently.
A possible answer has emerged in Spain. Football Insider reports that Villarreal defender Alex Freeman is open to joining City in 2027 after attracting their interest. The 22-year-old United States international moved from Orlando City to Villarreal in January 2026, and his progress has brought him onto the radar of English clubs.
Freeman has made 10 La Liga appearances this season, playing 594 minutes and scoring once. He has added three Champions League appearances, while his reported 91.7% passing accuracy in Europe highlights his composure in possession. Being 6ft 2in, the American offers physical presence, and his experience at right-back and centre-back gives Maresca another way to organise his defence. Villarreal have him under contract until 2032, which strengthens their negotiating position.
Freeman’s reported willingness to move gives City encouragement, but Villarreal hold the stronger hand in negotiations. The Spanish club reportedly paid £5 million for him, and his long contract gives them every reason to demand a substantial profit. No transfer fee or wage demand has emerged, so any suggestion of a bargain would be premature.
City should continue monitoring his progress, although they cannot mistake potential for an immediate solution. Maresca needs dependable cover, while Freeman still has to prove himself over a sustained period in European football. A 2027 move makes sense if Villarreal accept a reasonable fee and City offer a clear route into the first team. Paying an inflated price for a developing defender, however, could leave the more urgent right-back problem unresolved.
