Chelsea delivered a dismal performance in a London derby, suffering a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham in their Premier League evening fixture.

A storm battered Stamford Bridge, adding to the misery of the faithful in the Matthew Harding Stand and the Shed End. With the rain pouring down and the Blues struggling to get going, it made for a glum autumn evening.

As the clocks go back this evening, Chelsea fans, players and Xabi Alonso will surely wish they could turn back time and erase this miserable night.

Following the result, we look at the winners and losers from Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat to Tottenham.

Loser - Cole Palmer

He looked set to earn a strong rating after carrying the greatest attacking threat, but a chaotic ten-minute spell saw him receive two yellow cards, with both challenges arguably serious enough to warrant straight reds.

He and Pedro Neto were Chelsea’s best players on the ball, but his dismissal ultimately proved the biggest disappointment of the evening.

Loser - Danny Welbeck

Overlooked for 87 minutes despite Chelsea desperately needing a recognised striker. Morgan Rogers is not a centre-forward, and his deep positioning played into Tottenham’s hands, allowing their defence and midfield to enjoy a comfortable evening.

Winner - Estevao

There was only one clear roar from the Chelsea faithful in the second half, and it came when Estevao was seconds away from coming on. The reception spoke volumes, sending a clear message to both the players and Xabi Alonso that the fans want to see far more of the Brazilian than he is currently being afforded.

Estevao looked bright after coming on and created a decent chance, although his effort drifted off target. However, Chelsea’s poor performance and the sending-off killed any momentum he might have built, leaving him with little opportunity to make a meaningful impact.

Loser - Mike Penders

He came into the game under considerable pressure and would have wanted the conditions to work in his favour. He made two decent saves from Omar Marmoush and Mathys Tel in the first half, but his evening unravelled when he came to punch a corner and inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.

There was an argument that Jean-Paul van Hecke had fouled him, but a decision in Chelsea’s favour would have been a significant let-off. Unfortunately for the Blues and Penders, neither the incident nor the outcome went their way.

Shame as I wanted to announce his new nickname, Magic Mike, if he kept a clean sheet.

Loser - Xabi Alonso

You could argue that Alonso got both his tactics and team selection wrong, particularly his decision to start without a recognised striker in Joao Pedro’s absence and his reliance on an intense pressing game that Tottenham eventually bypassed with ease.

Many fans are now questioning Alonso’s in-game management, arguing that he failed to address the problems even when it was clear for everyone to see what was going wrong.
