Bucs defensive standout proving to be their best offseason addition

When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed A'Shawn Robinson this offseason, the expectation was that he would provide veteran depth and reinforce an already talented defensive front. Six games into the 2026 season, Robinson has done considerably more than that. He has arguably become Tampa Bay's most effective defensive tackle, outperforming expectations and emerging as one of the few consistent bright spots during an otherwise disappointing season. Robinson's impact was on display again Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers when he recorded his second interception of the season. Rookie Rueben Bain Jr. deflected an Aaron Rodgers pass at the line of scrimmage, allowing Robinson to secure the football and give Tampa Bay's offense an early scoring opportunity. It was another example of a defensive lineman finding ways to influence games beyond traditional tackles and sacks.

Two interceptions from a 320-pound defensive tackle over six games is remarkable, but Robinson's contributions go far beyond his unexpected production in coverage. Entering Week 6, Robinson held an 89.1 overall defensive grade from Pro Football Focus, ranking first among 132 qualifying interior defensive linemen. His 89.3 run defense grade ranked second at the position, establishing him as one of the league's most effective interior run defenders. He also generated five quarterback pressures and recorded a sack. Robinson has provided Tampa Bay with the interior discipline and physicality necessary to keep opposing rushing attacks in check. His ability to occupy blockers, maintain leverage, and disrupt running lanes has helped create opportunities for the linebackers playing behind him.

What makes his emergence particularly significant is the presence of Vita Vea. For years, Vea has been the centerpiece of Tampa Bay's defensive interior, commanding double teams and dictating how opposing offenses approach the line of scrimmage. Robinson's production has given the Buccaneers another legitimate force inside, rather than leaving Vea to carry the unit. Robinson's 58.3 pass-rush grade entering Week 6 suggests he has not been particularly dominant in rushing the quarterback. However, his outstanding work against the run, combined with his ability to generate turnovers, has made him one of Tampa Bay's most valuable defenders.
