Phillip Tietz’s first-half strike - his fifth Bundesliga goal in six games - extended Mainz’s winning start away from home to inflict defeat on Schalke, who are yet to score at the Veltins-Arena this season.

Schalke, coming into this game after defeat in Freiburg, had gone two home games this season without scoring, both of them goalless draws against Bayern Munich and Elversberg.

Mainz, meanwhile, had won both of their away fixtures so far this term, scoring nine goals in the process and extending an unbeaten run on the road to eight Bundesliga matches.

Karius denies Mainz twice in the opening minute

Schalke got the game under way at a packed Veltins-Arena, and within the opening minute Jaesung Lee played through Sheraldo Becker, who was denied at the near post by Loris Karius. Lee's own follow-up effort was also blocked by the Schalke goalkeeper in a superb double save.

Schalke gradually settled, with Adrian Gantenbein firing over from the edge of the box on 16 minutes and seeing a left-footed effort blocked by Stefan Posch four minutes later.

Tietz breaks the deadlock

Mainz finally broke through in the 24th minute when Anthony Caci's whipped ball from the right towards the near post found, who Tietz held off Nikola Katić and poked the ball past Karius to make it 1-0.

Becker then went close again on 35 minutes, forcing another fine save from Karius, before Nadiem Amiri and Kaishu Sano were booked for late fouls on Satoshi Tanaka in the 42nd and 45th minutes as the first half drew to a close with Mainz 1-0 ahead.

Schalke push but cannot find an equaliser

Mainz continued to control the second half, with Becker cutting inside from the left on 69 minutes only to see his effort go just wide of Karius' post.

Kenan Karaman led the Schalke response but was unable to find a breakthrough, while substitute Hee Chan Hwang headed straight into the arms of Alexander Schwolow in the 85th minute.

Karius denied Tietz once more in the second half, and Hasan Kuruçay made a crucial sliding challenge on Tietz in the 89th minute to preserve the scoreline as Urs Fischer's Mainz saw out the remaining minutes to secure a 1-0 win, their third straight away victory.

Man of the Match: Loris Karius

Karius denied Becker and Lee in a double save inside the opening minute, produced another strong stop to keep out Becker before half-time, and continued to deny Mainz chances in the second half, including a late save from Tietz, keeping the deficit to a single goal, earning him Man of the Match.
