Alexis Mac Allister’s future at Liverpool has become a burning topic so far this season after the midfielder returned to the form which saw him nominated for the PFA Player of the Year in 2025.
Many supporters had written Mac Allister off after a dismal 2025/26 campaign, but he has roared back to life under Andoni Iraola, leading to a clamour for him to sign a new contract.
Reports have suggested that Liverpool have opened talks with Mac Allister over an extension, and when asked about any developments in a new interview with Sky Sports on Friday, the Argentine hinted that a switch in sporting director may hold the key to his future. In doing so, Mac Allister also appeared to confirm that a change of ownership is about to happen at Anfield.

Liverpool have a LOT of attacking options and someone has to miss out 👀 What front three would you select?
After they sold more than 30% of the club over the summer, there has been a growing feeling that Fenway Sports Group are on the way out of Liverpool after more than 16 years.
1892 Holdings, led by new vice-chairman Amit Bhatia, are big favourites to take the reins, and while touching on what comes next for him personally, Mac Allister may have accidentally confirmed that the torch will soon be passed.
“The situation didn’t change. But there is a new sporting director, there is new ownership coming into the club, so anything can still happen,” said the No. 10. “We will see whether it’s this season or next season.
“Right now, I’m enjoying my football, enjoying playing for this amazing club that is one of the best in the world. We will see what happens in the future.”
Although most supporters will zone in on Mac Allister’s comments about his own future, it is fascinating that he should mention the possibility of new ownership.
While there is no guarantee that new owners won’t simply see things in the same way, Mac Allister seems to be holding out and waiting to see how the cards fall. With two years still to go on his contract there is no huge rush to jump into something, so he has the luxury of being able to watch on before making an informed decision.
It is also crucial that he mentions the new circumstances in sporting director. Julian Ward was vital in bringing Mac Allister to Liverpool, and it is not a stretch to say that his re-appointment has handed the 27-year-old a big boost in contract discussions. So too has his form under Andoni Iraola and the fact that the new head coach sees him as being a key player.
Ultimately, though, sporting decisions at Liverpool tend to be passed down the chain of command right from the top. FSG would almost certainly be reluctant to extend Mac Allister’s deal because of his age, but the fact that the player himself is weighing the chance of new owners into his decision suggests that things really are about to change at Liverpool.
