A few weeks ago, it would have been completely inconceivable to think that Olympique de Marseille would head into this game against RC Lens as a marginal favourite. It was at the start of October that OM were touted as a relegation candidate. Four wins in a row in Ligue 1 have changed the narrative. The calibre of the opponent mitigated the optimism but Thursday night’s win over Bayer Leverkusen has unleashed it. There is no doubt that this Marseille team is limited both in terms of depth and quality, but there is no doubt that Bruno Genesio is getting a tune out of his players.
The same cannot be said for Yannick Cahuzac. Not only do they head into this game below Marseille in the table, they also approach the game off the back of a historic 9-1 defeat at home to Como 1907. You would think that Lens’ squad would bear scars from that loss. And doubts about Cahuzac that had been creeping have now erupted to the surface. Are we already at a point where he is fighting for his job? In any case, the pressure is on. It is off Marseille, but they will arrive at the Bollaert smelling blood.
