The defender has been plagued by injuries in recent seasons, with muscle problems proving an issue.
Touch wood, Carter has barely missed a training session this term and the team are benefiting as a result.
The 27-year-old, no longer a young prospect, is at a crucial period of his career, where he needs to stay fit. He is happy for his workload to be managed to ensure he's available long-term.
"I am enjoying it," he told BBC Radio Lancashire.
"Last year was a tough year for me. I only played 10 games but to start this season as I have, has been very positive.
"I've had a good few months; I have missed one week with a niggle. I have been fit from the first day of pre-season.
"It was similar last year but luck then wasn't on my side. I hope that has fully changed now and I can keep helping the team.
"The Bristol City game was the first Saturday-Tuesday game I have done since March. I wasn't expecting to play West Brom and that has something I have learned about myself.
"It might benefit the team if I miss one game to prevent an injury than play and miss 10. The manager has been good with me and talks to me about that.
"There is good competition; it was only a few weeks ago and we went to Preston with only Sean who could start the game at centre-back."

Rovers have now lost just one of their last six matches, winning four of those. Their fortunes at Ewood Park have been transformed too after a hat-trick of victories.
Carter believes that upturn from last season's struggles has come after a period of adaptation for last summer's additions.
With Tony Mowbray providing experience and stability as the figurehead too, the mood around the club is far more positive.
"Last season, it was a lot of the lads' first season in England, not just the Championship.
"A new country, settling in, it was tough for them. Going forward, Dapo (Afolayan) and Andri (Gudjohnsen) have been on fire, Todd (Cantwell) too.
"Having them in front of you as a defender is very good because if they have a chance, they'll take it.
"Everyone enjoys coming in, we have a good group with good camaraderie. We want to work for each other.
"We've been on a good run, bar West Brom and we hope to keep that going. The break was good for us, we got players fit and time to work on things in training.
"Since we have come back, it has been very positive."
Victory over Wrexham was the latest in this purple patch, with Andri Gudjohnsen making the difference.
Rovers fans have been used to having a talismanic figure and the Icelandic forward is now the latest to take that mantle.
Carter felt they were good value for the victory and explained how important it is to have such a clinical striker at the top of the pitch.
"I think we deserved it," he insisted.
"We dealt with their threats, two big lads up top, which they played forward to early and try to pick up second balls.
"We handled that and then going forward, if it had been three or four nil, I don't think they could have said much about it.
"It was a fair result and we have Andri who can't stop scoring at the moment. It makes a big difference.
"We've had plenty of players here that have scored 20-plus goals. The points that accumulate with having someone like that is very good for us."
