Chris Hogg took ‘full responsibility’ for his side’s hugely disappointing 4-0 defeat at York City as they suffered another FA Cup first round exit.

Cobblers fell behind to one of the fastest goals in FA Cup history when hesitant defending straight from kick-off allowed Ollie Pearce to volley home inside 10 seconds. He curled in a second 10 minutes later before Alex Hunt put the tie to bed with less than half-an-hour on the clock.

The second half was something of a non-event until Josh Stones added a fourth as Town lost in the first round for the seventh successive season.

“The first half was one of the slowest performances I’ve witnessed on the touchline,” said Hogg. “You can’t start any game the way we started today.

“Before you blink you’re 3-0 down and it’s definitely not what we wanted. We knew it would a tough game against a good team who have been very strong at home.

“Some of the goals we conceded were so far off the level that we expected of each other. I take full responsibility for that. I set the team up, I pick the team and I send the team out. It’s on me.

“Half-time was difficult, we had some honest conversations, but we have to give more and we have to do better. It’s a disappointing way to go out of the FA Cup.

“The last two games have not been what we expect of each other. We know it’s going to be a grind of a season and it won’t be a straight line but there are certain things we have to improve and improve quickly and that’s my job.”
