Welling United 4-2 Burgess Hill Town

Manager, Ryan Maxwell had to make an enforced change with Nathan Cooper suspended. Zak O’Keefe moved from right back to centre back with Zuriel Otseh-Taiwo taking his normal place. Chris Harris was given his full debut and new signings Jaden Brissett and Kweku Lucan were named on the substitute’s bench.

Starting up the slope, Welling took time to settle and were probably second best until Harris headed wide from a Sam Smith corner. Chris Whelpdale headed over from close range for the visitors before Maxwell’s team went ahead in the twenty-eighth minute. Zak O’Keefe hurled in a long throw, it bounced around in the penalty area and fell behind Fumnaya Shomotun. He spun before firing into the bottom corner.

He then drew a good diving save out of Roco Rees before Welling had one more chance before half time when Demaray Anyadike pulled it back to Harris and Rees made a good save from his close range shot.

After the break, Shomotun’s shot was deflected over before he added his second on the hour mark. Otseh Taiwo played it down the right wing and Shomotun left two defenders in his wake before cutting in and firing a twenty yard left foot drive in off the far post.

Nahum Melvin-Lambert came on as a substitute and twice came close before the Hillians pulled one back against the run of play. Hamish Morrison got forward and squeezed it in from a tight angle.

Two minutes later, Welling restored their two goal lead when Lekan Majoyegbe headed home from a Jamie Reynolds free kick.

Melvin-Lambert added a fourth when he slotted home from Shomotun’s pull back before Brissett and Lucan were introduced for their first taste of the action in Wings’ colours.

Two minutes remained when the visitors scored a consolation goal. Charlie Lambert was fouled in the penalty area by goalkeeper Phil Ogayi, and George Vorster converted from the spot.

Welling United: Ogayi; Otseh-Taiwo, O’Keefe, Majoyegbe, Arthur; Blackman, Smith (Miller-Rodney 71); Anyadike (Brissett 81), Bennett (Reynolds 55), Shomotun (Lucan 81); Harris (Melvin-Lambert 66). Subs not used: None.
