Canelo Álvarez feels no pressure carrying Mexico into the ring every fight

Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez returns to the ring for a showdown against WBC super middleweight champion Christian Mbilli on Saturday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The event, billed as "Mexico vs. The World," holds special meaning for Álvarez (63-3-2, 39 KOs), who sees representing his country not as a burden but as a profound honor. For him, carrying the Mexican flag is a privilege he cherishes every time he steps into the spotlight.

Born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico, Álvarez has never forgotten his origins, staying deeply connected to his roots and proudly weaving Mexican culture into every facet of his career.

His ring entrances have become legendary, often featuring Mariachi bands, regional Mexican musicians, and stirring renditions of “El Rey,” the iconic 1971 ranchera anthem by José Alfredo Jiménez.

Canelo Álvarez embraces Mexican pride

When Álvarez steps inside the ring, he is acutely aware of the millions of Mexicans watching and supporting him from around the world. Yet, when asked if the expectations ever become a source of pressure rather than pride, Álvarez is unwavering: he insists he never feels pressure—only motivation and honor.

“I am always ready to represent my country and I am very proud to represent Mexico,” Álvarez said. “I never feel pressure; if anything, the thought of pressure makes me work even harder. For me, it’s all about pride and being prepared to make my country proud every time I fight.”

Álvarez added that praise and criticism come and go, but nothing compares to the pride he feels in representing Mexico. Win or lose, his foremost satisfaction comes from giving his all for his homeland.

“I don’t care about the good or bad things people say about me. This is bigger than me,” Álvarez said. “I am proud of where I come from and to be Mexican. That will always be my greatest honor.”

This fight holds even greater significance for Álvarez, as the card features a strong contingent of Mexican fighters.

Joining Álvarez on this star-studded card are fellow Mexican champions Jaime Munguía, who will defend his super middleweight title; Rafael “Divino” Espinoza, putting his featherweight world title on the line; and Alan David “Rey” Picasso, competing in the super bantamweight division.

Now, Álvarez returns to boxing as a title challenger for the first time since 2022, following a unanimous decision loss to Terence Crawford in September 2025, a bout in which he insisted he gave everything he had.

Despite swirling questions about whether he still possesses the skills that once made him an undisputed champion, Álvarez remains unshaken. He refuses to let doubts about his legacy or future define him, staying focused on the honor of fighting for his country and determined to prove himself once again on the world stage.
