How short passes replaced the run game in Steelers win

When an NFL ground attack hits a brick wall early in a game, calling plays can quickly turn into an exercise in frustration. For the Pittsburgh Steelers down in Tampa Bay, the rushing game stalled out entirely in the first half as the Buccaneers built a 13-0 lead.

Rather than forcing ineffective handoffs between the tackles, Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh offense executed a critical second-half adjustment, turning high-percentage, short passes into a functional extension of their run game.

Former NFL quarterback and analyst Chris Simms highlighted this tactical shift during “Pro Football Talk,” pointing out how the quick-passing concept ultimately sparked Pittsburgh’s fourth-quarter comeback victory.

“What they really did because they couldn't run the ball as effectively as they wanted to, they found little short throws to be an extension of the run game with Germie Bernard and DK Metcalf and they had a lot of cool little neat completions that way and that's really how they won the game,” Simms explained.

By abandoning predictable early-down runs in favor of quick rhythm throws, Pittsburgh systematically neutralized Tampa Bay’s aggressive front seven. The offense utilized short perimeter routes, motion, and localized blocking schemes to stretch the zone horizontally. The shift allowed playmakers to catch the ball in space with room to operate, taking the physical burden off the traditional backfield carry.

Simms noted that the game plan relied heavily on precise execution and swift distribution rather than deep, chunk-play hunting.

“Little pick plays, little screen plays, little let's stretch out the zone and just throw a four-yard pass to one of these guys and let them make a play,” added Simms.

The strategic pivot kept the offense on schedule, sustained long drives, and ultimately allowed Pittsburgh to rally for 16 second-half points before securing the win in overtime. Showing that kind of adaptability and trusting short completions to serve as a surrogate run game provide a clear blueprint for how Pittsburgh can stay multidimensional even when traditional ground concepts stall out.
