Novak Djokovic will soon get his Basel Open campaign underway as he continues his pursuit of qualifying for the ATP Finals for the 17th time.

The Serb is currently 10th in the race to Turin, where the year-end tournament is held, and needs a lengthy run in Basel and at the Paris Masters to give himself the best chance at qualification. Djokovic‘s last appearance at the ATP Finals was back in 2023, where he won the event for the seventh time.

Djokovic’s tally of seven is the most of any player in Open Era history, but that isn’t even the most impressive ATP Finals record he holds.

Novak Djokovic’s quickest ATP Finals qualification ever

In 2011, Djokovic set an all-time record for the quickest ATP Finals qualification since the inception of the event in 1970. That season, the eventual 24-time Grand Slam champion recorded arguably the best half to a campaign of any player in history.

Djokovic did not lose a single match until the Roland Garros semifinals, winning consecutive titles at the Australian Open, the Dubai Tennis Championships, the Indian Wells Open, the Miami Open, the Belgrade Open, the Madrid Open and the Italian Open. His 41-match winning streak ultimately came to an end when Roger Federer beat him in the final four of the French Open.

With his success, Djokovic officially qualified for the ATP Finals on May 15, six months before the showpiece event kicked off. He beat the record previously held by his longtime rival Rafael Nadal, who confirmed his qualification for the 2009 ATP Finals on May 19.

Which ATP player will win the 2026 Vienna Open?

In addition to holding the record, Djokovic has tallied three of the four quickest ATP Finals qualifications ever. He qualified on June 2 in 2016 and June 4 in 2015. Federer recorded the next fastest qualification by confirming his place in the 2006 ATP Finals on June 6.

No player has won the ATP Finals in consecutive seasons more than Djokovic, who was dominant from 2012 to 2015. He lost one match during that period, falling in a round-robin match against Federer at the 2015 ATP Finals.

Djokovic’s streak came to an end at the 2016 edition, when he was denied five in a row by Andy Murray in the championship match. Murray and Djokovic were fighting for both the ATP Finals title and year-end number one status, and the Briton came out on top in straight sets.
