The Cowboys have slumped to 2-4. Does second-year head coach Brian Schottenheimer still have the full support of ownership?
“Absolutely,” Stephen Jones said Monday when asked that question on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas, via Todd Archer of ESPN. “There’s not any question in Jerry’s and I’s mind. He has the team. There’s no question they want to go out there and execute and make things happen. We feel really good . . . about our coaching staff. We just have to continue to evolve and get to a point where we can win these football games.”
True or not, it’s the only answer Jones could give in a public setting. They still need the fans to believe in the coaching staff; if ownership doesn’t, why should the fans?
And even though the Cowboys have fallen flat in three straight prime-time games, they have a very winnable game against the Eagles next Monday night. Primarily because the Eagles are currently in as much disarray as any team in the league, if not more.
Besides, the division is there to be had. The Giants have lost their starting quarterback for the year, the Eagles have lost their starting quarterback for the year, and the Commanders are currently too inconsistent. If Dallas can get its act together, the Cowboys could win the division and host a playoff game.
Conversely, failure to turn it around could raise plenty of questions. Schottenheimer could be out. And if/when there’s a new coach, who knows how different the roster might look?
For now, yes, they’ll fully support everyone. If they fail to win what is becoming a none-of-the-above division, that could change. Quickly.
And, ar that point, the only person who would be safe is the G.M.
