It has been a complete disaster of a season for the Los Angeles Chargers, who sit at 0-6 and enter their Week 7 bye before a Week 8 road game against the Los Angeles Rams.
The Week 8 matchup comes nine days before the NFL trade deadline on Nov. 10. Many analysts, including former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason, are offering possible landing spots for Herbert if he’s traded, either this season or after the 2026-27 season.
Appearing on his show, “Kickoff with Boomer and Valenti,” Esiason, the former Cincinnati Bengals, New York Jets, and Arizona Cardinals quarterback, was initially asked about what the Dallas Cowboys might do if they continue to slide (they sit at 2-4 heading into Week 7) and if it might be time to move on from quarterback Dak Prescott.
“Could you see Justin Herbert a Dallas Cowboy uniform?” the former second-round pick started.
“Let’s just fantasize about that for a second. I mean, Justin Herbert goes to the Cowboys and Dak Prescott goes to the Chargers. That would be amazing. That would be great for NFL. That would be great for football,” Esiason continued.
“Now, both of these guys probably have no move clauses or no trade clauses in their contracts, but maybe both of the guys are sick and tired of where they are by the time we get to the end of the season,” he added. For now, the speculation is coming from outside the organization: Adam Schefter reported Oct. 13 that a Chargers source said the team had not discussed trading Herbert, whose contract also includes a no-trade clause.
As mentioned, the Chargers are 0-6, and the Cowboys are 2-4. Dallas plays on the road at Philadelphia in Week 7, while the Chargers are on their bye.
Interestingly, both teams are among the worst in the NFL, but in different ways. The Chargers are ranked 32nd in PFN’s NFL Offense Impact metric, with a grade of 61.8. The Cowboys are 32nd in PFN’s NFL Defense Impact metric, with a 61.1 grade.
“I think that would be a dream scenario for all of us who cover the NFL. I don’t know that would help, and I don’t think Dak is going anywhere,” Esiason concluded.
As for these signal callers, Herbert ranks 34th in PFN’s NFL QB Impact metric with a grade of 61.0, and Prescott ranks 12th with a grade of 78.5.
Herbert has not played well this season, and it appears not to be clicking with new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel. Herbert has just five touchdown passes and eight interceptions in six games, while Prescott has 10 touchdown passes and five interceptions.
The idea of trading Herbert has been discussed plenty, with analysts like Chris Broussard arguing the Chargers should ship him out of town and draft a quarterback in the 2027 NFL Draft.
We’ll see what the Chargers do this offseason. If they land the No. 1 overall pick, do they draft a quarterback like Drew Mestemaker, or do they keep Herbert and add an elite weapon like Jeremiah Smith? We shall see.
