Bath got back in the W column after a strong victory over Sale Sharks, winning 36-28 and earning the bonus point

The host raced into the lead as the returning Henry Arundell scored the game’s opening try in the winger's first Prem appearance of the season.

Sale hit back through their driving maul, with Nathan Jibulu the beneficiary, with George Ford slotting the extras to make it 7-7 apiece.

Bath took control of the contest with two quick tries, with Tom de Glanville scoring after some close-range work from the pack, while Joe Cokansiga scored after Bath went from one side of the pitch to the other with a sweeping move.

Bath extended their lead with their bonus-point try as Joe Cokansiga scored a brilliant solo try, but Sale hit back with Tom O'Flaherty scoring as Bath failed to clear their lines.

The host secured victory with Louie Hennessey dotting down on 64 minutes, but Sale managed to snatch a try bonus-point with two late tries as Luke Cowan-Dickie and Elia Canakaivata crossed.

Rugby writer Sam Jess gives his ratings for the Bath players

15 Tom de Glanville - 7

Back after a month out with an injury, Tom de Glanville was a welcome figure at fullback for Bath with a steady but strong performance. The fullback’s best moment of the match came as he showed some neat feet to step his way past Tom Roebuck for Bath’s second try. De Glanville did the simple things well, including Bath’s third try, as he sent Joe Cokanasiga over by executing the overlap with great effect. However, he will want to forget the final play of the first half, which saw him butcher a counter-attack by keeping the ball in hand and being turned over. De Glanville didn’t have as many attacking moments in the second half but was still a welcome presence at the back.

14 Joe Cokanasiga - 8

The winger played full of confidence, and it showed. He ended the first half with a well-taken try before a moment of magic when he took a high ball before racing away to score a solo try. Cokansiga was brilliant ball in hand and caused headaches for Sale’s defence.

13 Ollie Lawrence - 8

Keeping his place in the centres, Lawrence produced some of his best rugby since his achilles injury. Lawrence executed the simple things well, with his handling far improved, allowing the centre to flourish in attack. The centre often busted his way through contact, but if not, he used some great offloads and passes to help Bath find the edge in attack. The defence was a little suspect at times too, as he was caught in no man’s land. However, when Lawrence was in the right position, his tackling was effective, and he even earned himself a neat turnover.

12 Max Ojomoh - 7

The centre has one of his quieter games but did concede a high tackle penalty, but Ojomoh’s afternoon improved as he showed his attacking strengths with some brilliant link-up play with Russell and Lawrence. Ojomoh showed great work rate to win a turnover deep in Sale’s half even when the game was up.

11 Henry Arundell - 7

In his first Prem appearance of the season after a layoff with a back injury, Arundell won the opening kick-off but slapped it back to Christ Tshiunza, who broke away in a great counter. However, the winger’s afternoon rapidly improved as he cut open Sale’s midfield defence before showing his speed to score a solo try. Arundell’s skills under high ball were highlighted as he kick-started Bath’s attack for their third try.

10 Finn Russell - 7

The fly-half has not been at his fluid attacking best so far this season, but today Russell was up to his old tricks with a strong outing. In the opening exchanges, he produced a sensational crossfield kick from a penalty inside his own half that almost created a try. Bath did opt for an old-fashioned three-point penalty, but Russell’s aim was off with a simple miss. Russell's footwork in attack was subtle but effective, giving him more time and opening space for his backline. He started the second half by launching a crossfield to Joe Cokanasiga, who raced away for a try. The fly-half was a little too casual from the resulting kick-off; a lacklustre forward pass gave Sale a scrum 5m from the Bath line, which the Sharks scored from. Russell controlled the game well throughout, even if he did fire in the odd offload which his teammates weren’t expecting.

9 Ben Spencer (c) - 7

After a rather poor game from the captain last week, Spencer showed plenty more of his talent, particularly in his variety of passing close to the fringes. His box kicking was effective throughout the contest, but it wasn’t his only option, which was crucial to Bath’s improvement.

1 Beno Obano - 6

The prop was solid at scrum time and showed his worth with a 70-minute outing.

2 Dan Frost - 7

Back in the starting shirt, Frost's set-piece started very strong but, as is the case with Bath’s hookers this season, after one lineout was missed, the next few failed to find their target. Despite a few lineout woes, Frost was strong in the loose and defence, with his last involvement putting in a huge shot on Gus Warr.

3 Archie Griffin - 6

The prop was given a tough time by his fellow Welshman Nicky Smith but just about got away with it.

4 Will Jeanes - 7

The lock was a bright prospect, including in the carry, as his neat footwork was a useful tool in close contact. Jeanes was much more disciplined around the field compared to the previous week, a bright figure and one for the future.

5 Charlie Ewels - 7

Ewels was back to his best and was a key figure in defence as he led Bath’s defensive line and pressure throughout the contest.

6 Ted Hill - 6

Hill showed his attacking presence with plenty of strong runs in the 15m channel while his counter-rucking work was top-notch.

7 Miles Reid - 8

Back to his best, Reid was a key figure in the defence breakdown as Bath often opted for a counter-ruck in defence to turn the ball over rather than the jackal. Reid was a lively presence and showed his work rate to earn a vital jackal penalty.

8 Josh Bayliss - 7

Shifting to number eight, Bayliss was an energetic figure as he picked up plenty of scraps.

16 Tom Dunn - 8

After some poor performances by his standard to start the season, Dunn was back to his best as he kept the lineout ticking while his work at the scrum was powerful enough to turn the tide.

17 Claudius Wheeler - N/A

The prop made his Prem debut but did not get long to show his stuff.

18 Will Stuart - 7

The England prop showed his power from the bench to dominate the scrum.

19 Enoch Opoku-Gyamfi - 7

The Italian added some great bulk and power around the field, including at scrum time, but did spill a ball with little pressure on him.

20 Ewan Richards - N/A

21 Bernard van der Linde - 8

Back into the 23, van der Linde showed his skills from the bench, including a delightful pin-perfect grubber to send over Hennessey for a try.

22 Louie Hennessey - 8

The Welsh international showed his worth off the bench and took a well-taken try less than a minute after he was introduced.
