The Los Angeles Lakers begin their post-LeBron James era at home against the Golden State Warriors. Team management became aggressive in reshaping the team after the NBA icon’s departure via free agency.

While no single free agent possesses the varied skill set that James continues to boast, the front office decided to revamp the roster. Now, with guard Luka Dončić as the focal point, the Lakers look towards the future. A former NBA guard offers his take on the team’s current state and what he sees as their possible future.

Former NBA Guard Lou Williams Questions Lakers’ Depth Behind Luka Dončić

Dončić is the undisputed leader of the team, a two-time scoring champion who also holds career averages of at least 8 assists and 8 rebounds. On what seems like an annual basis, Dončić figures among the league’s elite. However, Lou Williams, a 17-year veteran who spent two seasons with the Lakers, questioned the team’s approach.

“It’s not a white thing for me; it’s a talent thing for me. After Austin Reaves and Luka, who’s the next guy that can give you that?” he pondered.

During the offseason, the Lakers took criticism, some real and some in jest, about bringing in many White players. Williams dismissed that and focused on the talent levels. Walker Kessler is a double-double center who can also move and provide rim protection.

Kevon Looney is a low-post player who can provide sound rebounding off the bench.

Collin Sexton is a veteran combo guard who can spell Dončić. Meanwhile, players like swingman Quentin Grimes could start and will be expected to contribute immediately, while Sandro Mamukelashvili is essentially a stretch four who can provide spacing.

“If you’re hedging your bets on Quentin Grimes, he’s gonna have to have a tremendous season,” Williams added.

For his career, the 26-year-old Grimes has averaged 11.1 points. In 2024-25, split between Dallas and Philadelphia, the former first-round pick averaged a career-high 14.6 points. After joining the 76ers, Grimes averaged 21.9 points in 28 games.

The Lakers need similar production from Grimes. Williams not only cites Grimes’ production but talks about the added pressure of where he’s playing.

“Those are some shiny, bright, bright lights when you play for the Lakers, supposed to other teams. He’s seen it before in New York, but this is different. And he has a different job an expectation level with this group than he has before. I just don’t see it right now,” Williams stated.

As a member of the Knicks, except for the 2022-23 season, Grimes primarily came off the bench. Due to his lucrative contract, the Lakers will demand more.

Grimes is a candidate to start on the wing alongside Dončić and Reaves, which could give Los Angeles a three-guard look. As mentioned, James’ departure created an opportunity for Dončić to become the Lakers’ leader. Now, he needs his supporting cast to step up.
