Bavuma’s Career-Best 179 Leads Remarkable Proteas Fightback Against Australia

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma produced a magnificent career-best 179 as the Proteas staged an extraordinary recovery on Day 3 of the second Test against Australia at St George’s Park in Gqeberha.

After resuming on 97/5, South Africa recovered from 110/6 to declare their first innings on 425/9, thanks to outstanding contributions from Bavuma, Marco Jansen and Simon Harmer.

Bavuma’s innings was the cornerstone of the recovery, while Jansen struck 85 and Harmer registered his maiden Test half-century with a career-best 82.

Bavuma and Harmer also combined for a record-breaking 183-run eighth-wicket partnership, the highest for South Africa in Test cricket.

The Proteas then made an immediate breakthrough with the ball as Kagiso Rabada dismissed Nic Maddinson for a duck, leaving Australia on 3/1 after 3.5 overs, trailing by 422 runs.

South Africa began the third day needing a substantial contribution from their remaining batters after Australia’s bowlers had dominated the rain-affected opening two days.

Bavuma resumed on 41, with Wiaan Mulder unbeaten on two, as the pair attempted to rebuild the innings.

However, their partnership was broken when Mitchell Starc dismissed Mulder for 13 in the 50th over.

The Australian fast bowler produced a sharp short delivery that struck Mulder’s glove, with the dismissal confirmed following a successful review.

The wicket left South Africa struggling at 110/6 and brought up Starc’s 450th Test wicket.

With the Proteas facing the prospect of being dismissed for a modest first-innings total, Jansen joined Bavuma and immediately looked to shift the momentum.

The left-hander played positively, taking advantage of scoring opportunities and putting Australia’s bowlers under pressure.

Jansen reached his half-century from just 43 deliveries, striking seven fours and two sixes on his way to the milestone.

His attacking approach complemented Bavuma’s more patient innings, allowing the pair to build a substantial partnership while keeping the scoreboard moving.

Bavuma reached his half-century from 140 deliveries before continuing to anchor the innings.

The pair added 132 runs for the seventh wicket, transforming South Africa’s position from 110/6 to 242/7.

By lunch, South Africa had recovered to 216/6, with Bavuma unbeaten on 76 and Jansen on 72.

Jansen continued his aggressive approach after the interval but eventually fell for 85 from 100 deliveries, striking nine fours and three sixes.

The innings was the second-highest score of his Test career and provided a crucial contribution at a time when South Africa were under considerable pressure.

Scott Boland claimed the wicket when Jansen struck a delivery firmly towards short midwicket, where Travis Head completed the catch.

The dismissal gave Boland his fifth wicket of the innings, leaving South Africa on 242/7.

However, the Proteas’ recovery was far from over.

Harmer joined Bavuma at the crease and produced an outstanding lower-order batting performance as the pair continued to frustrate Australia’s bowlers.

Bavuma reached his century from 226 deliveries, having struck 11 fours and a six.

It was a significant innings from the Proteas captain, who had walked to the crease with South Africa struggling at 12/2 on the opening day.

Rather than allowing Australia’s early dominance to dictate the remainder of the innings, Bavuma showed patience and determination to rebuild alongside Jansen and Harmer.

The eighth-wicket partnership continued to grow as Harmer settled into his innings, rotating the strike and punishing loose deliveries.

South Africa reached tea on 318/7, with Bavuma unbeaten on 125 and Harmer on 30.

The pair continued their resistance during the final session, taking South Africa beyond 350 before Bavuma reached 150 from 299 deliveries.

Harmer then brought up his maiden Test half-century from 116 balls, having struck six fours and a six.

His contribution was particularly important considering the position South Africa had been in when he arrived at the crease.

Together, Bavuma and Harmer established a new South African Test record for the eighth wicket, surpassing the previous highest partnership as they added 183 runs.

The partnership helped South Africa move beyond 400, completing a remarkable turnaround after the hosts had been reduced to 110/6 earlier in the day.

Harmer eventually fell for 82 from 157 deliveries when Marnus Labuschagne bowled him attempting a slog sweep.

The dismissal left South Africa on 425/8 and brought an end to one of the most significant lower-order partnerships in the country’s Test history.

Bavuma’s outstanding innings came to an end just one delivery later when Starc found his outside edge, with wicketkeeper Alex Carey completing the catch.

The Proteas captain finished with 179 from 334 deliveries, including 18 fours and a six.

It was the highest score of Bavuma’s Test career, surpassing his previous best of 172.

His innings lasted 552 minutes and was instrumental in turning South Africa’s fortunes around after Australia’s bowlers had threatened to take complete control of the match.

Following Bavuma’s dismissal, South Africa declared on 425/9 after 127.1 overs, with Kagiso Rabada unbeaten on zero and Anrich Nortje not required to bat.

Boland was Australia’s most successful bowler, finishing with figures of 5/81 from 29 overs.

Starc claimed 3/89, while Labuschagne picked up the remaining wicket.

The declaration gave South Africa an opportunity to attack Australia’s top order before the close of play.

Rabada made an immediate impact, dismissing Maddinson for a duck in the opening over, with Harmer completing the catch.

Australia were reduced to 0/1, providing the Proteas with an ideal start after their outstanding batting recovery.

Travis Head and nightwatchman Boland survived the remaining deliveries as Australia reached 3/1 after 3.5 overs.

Head remained unbeaten on one, while Boland was on two.

The visitors trail South Africa by 422 runs heading into Day 4.

For the Proteas, the third day represented a dramatic turnaround in a match that had initially been dominated by Australia’s bowling attack and persistent rain.

Having lost five wickets for just 97 runs across the opening two days, South Africa appeared to be facing another difficult batting performance following their defeat in Durban.

However, Bavuma’s leadership with the bat, Jansen’s counterattacking innings and Harmer’s determined contribution transformed the contest.

The record eighth-wicket partnership between Bavuma and Harmer was particularly significant, ensuring South Africa posted a commanding first-innings total despite their early struggles.

With Australia already one wicket down, the Proteas will now look to build on their momentum when play resumes on Day 4.

South Africa’s bowlers will have an opportunity to apply pressure to Australia’s batting lineup, with the hosts looking to capitalise on their strong position and push towards a series-levelling victory.
